This seems to be serious. I've seen folks not only use them wrong, but tell others who are using them right that they're using the words wrong. I admit, they are tricky at times. So how do you know which one to use?
'Who' is the subject, i.e. Who went to the store?
'Whom' is the object, i.e. The store manager gave a discount to whom?
If that still has you stumped, think of it this way:
He/she/we = who. He/she/we went to the store. Therefore, the word taking place of he, she, or we in that sentence would be 'who'.
Him/her/us = whom. The store manager gave him/her/us a discount. The word 'whom' always takes the place of him, her, or us.
So when in doubt, say the sentence with one of the other words to see which sounds right. Voila! Something that was difficult, just became very simple.
Vote if you've ever had trouble with who and whom.
