Being Released

When Connor was excused to leave the hospital, he went to the bathroom in his room to get dressed. I noticed how his legs shook under him, how weak we was, as he walked in.

As soon as the bathroom door closed, his mom turned to me with a smile on her face. His dad rubbed his face roughly, and sighed, seemingly knowing what his wife was going to do.

"So, is something going on between you and my son?" She asked in a hushed yet excited voice.  Zoe copied her fathers actions, groaning and wiping her face.

"Mom, we both know that she is way out of Connors league," I felt my cheeks heat up, and let my hair cover my face, embarrassed.

"Yeah, yeah, go on about how I'm unlovable when I'm being released from the hospital," Connor came from the bathroom with the hospital gown folded over one of his arms. We was wearing a "I'm the reason we're late" T-shirt and a pair of dark blue jeans. His socks were bright blue with clouds, which I was sure Cynthia bought him, along side the shirt. I was sure he was not proud of the fact he was the one that made the family late to things, so why would he want a shirt of it?

"That's not what we were doing, was it Zoe?"

"It was what I was doing," Their mom shoulder checked Zoe, and walked up to Connor, slinging an arm over his shoulder.

"Why did you have to put together this outfit?" He groaned, shaking his mom off his back.

"I thought it was more your style than anything else I could put together,"

"She wanted to give you a tie dye shirt, be thankful I didn't let her," Zoe crossed her arms over her chest.

"She actually cares, at least a little," I thought as the family conversed. Cynthia turned to me, and I zoned back into what they were saying.

"Would you and Evan like to come over for dinner tonight?" I felt all eyes on me, and from my face to the base of my neck exploded in a deep blush under the pressure. I glanced at Connor, who's gaze seemed to burn through my skull, awaiting my answer.

"Well- I was going to make me and Evan dinner tonight a-and already have the chicken thawed out, b-but-uh- maybe another day?" The end of my sentence squeaked out as I struggled to keep talking. I felt a lot like how Evan usually was, anxious and fidgety, never knowing what to say. Cynthia seemed satisfied with my answer, though, and gave me a quick hug.

"I understand completely. You should probably get home then, school is almost over. Maybe you can have dinner ready by the time your brother gets home," She smiled wide at me as we walked out of the hospital.

"I'll... See you around," I said to no one in particular as I waved, starting to walk to my car.

I did as Cynthia asked, made dinner as soon as I got home and had it done by the time Evan was back from school.

"You weren't at school since we talked to Connors mom and dad, what did you do?" He asked as he walked through the door. He paused to smell the air, the smell of the chicken and potatoes I had made for dinner swimming in the air.

"I went to visit Connor in the hospital and got caught up there for a while by his family- mostly his mom,"

"Why did you visit him? You barely know him,"

"I just felt like I had to. A gut feeling," I paused, scooping potatoes on to a plate for Evan. "His mom invited us to dinner sometime. I hope she forgets about it, but if not, I'll talk about it with Connor when he gets back to school,"

"D-Dinner with the Murphy's?" I chuckled, putting his plate in front of him, along with a drink.

"Don't worry, I'm just as stoked as you are," Rolling my eyes, I fixed my own plate.
