Miley

Alex, Embry, Colten and Carlos ran through Sam and Emily's backyard, their finger-guns raised, ready to attack.

Alex and Carlos-Sam's sons-got along well with Embry, my son, and Colten, my daughter. The four were inseparable, even if Alex was a year older than Embry and Colt, end Emb and Colt were a year older than Carlos. They were the best of friends, and the bond between Embry and Carlos was just like the one Embry and I had shared once.

Paul was a part-time gym teacher at La Push High, and he was a part-time daddy. He was good with the kids, and even put up with them when Sam, Emily, Jared and Kim went on a double date.

Jared's daughter, Autumn, was eight years old and always lagged behind when it came to games. Quil's two year old daughter, Neil, was smart for her age. Leah's two sons, Michael and Desmond, dominated the basketball court. Seth's daughter, Summer, was thirteen and enjoyed drawing, singing and playing guitar. Jacob's daughter, Renee, loved hunting, singing, fixing cars and carving tiny wolf necklaces. Brady's son, Ares, was a beast at soccer, and was too cocky for his own good. Colin's son loved hunting and reading, an unlikely combination which was why we loved Emile.

Each child had the gene, and the only enemy left was time. One day, they would replace us and we'd start aging again. One day, they'd be the protectors of La Push.

"Mom! Uncle Quil smashed a water balloon on me while I was playing my guitar!" Summer shouted to Kaya, my sister in law.

"I did nothing!" Quil shot his hands in the air. It seemed weird to the people of Forks that we all looked so close in age to Alex, Carlos, Summer, Embry and Colten. We always used the adoption excuse and the kids had caught on quickly. It was easier for Sam, he had been twenty eight when Al was born.

"Quil! Grow up!" Seth tried keeping a straight face, but he'd screwed the mature fatherly act up by doubling over in laughter.

"What a lovely father I have," Summer shook her head and sighed. She slammed her pick down on her drawing book.

Alexander sat beside her in the grass and pulled her into him. "Relax, babe. You know Seth can't be serious to save his life."

Summer nodded and rested her head in Alex's lap. "I know. But that's probably why we love him so much."

"Al!" Seth shouted. "Don't impregnate my daughter any time soon!"

"Dad!" Summer screamed, hiding her face in Alex's stomach.

"Neil, look at the snowflakes!" Autumn told little Neil. "Aren't they pretty?"

Summer got up and brought her guitar inside. Alex and her stayed there.

"Pwetty flakes!" Neil giggled.

"Grandpa Charlie!" Colten ran to Charlie's car and jumped into his arms, the same way I had sixteen years ago, the day I'd gotten engaged to Paul Alexander Lahote.

"Chawie!" Neil stumbled her way over to Sue and Charlie. "Chawie!"

"Grandpa Charlie!" Summer came sprinting out of the house and into Charlie's arms. "Quil attacked me with water balloons earlier!"

"Quil Ateara." Charlie warned.

"Won't happen again, sir," Quil promised.

"Good," Charlie was satisfied and asked Summer to sing a song for him. They headed inside.

"Michael! It's mine! Let go!" Desmond fought for the little basketball that had been signed by Derek Rose. "You have your own, you filthy little Mudblood!" He used the Harry Potter insult on his brother.

"Desmond Carlisle Adams! Apologize to your brother right now!" Leah barked.

"I'm sorry, Michael." Desmond said as Michael let go of the ball and Desmond slammed onto his back, holding the ball as if it were his life.

"Snow! Snow!" Neil stomped through the powdery snow.

"Ares! You ruined my wolf!" Renee cried out. "Ugh, now I have to start all over!"

"You can just glue it back together," Ares shrugged.

"Ares Samuel Jason!" Brady shouted. "I told you to leave Renee alone when she's carving!"

Renee threw the Xacto knife at Ares' ball.

"You bit-"

"You started it!" Renee yelled.

"Language Ares!"

"THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU POP MY BALL, YOU BLATANT MUNDANE!" Ares shouted back.

"YOU BROKE MY WOLF!" Renee screamed.

"YOU GOT IN MY WAY!" Ares glared at her.

"Stop or else no TV for two weeks!" Emily spoke over the two. "Ares. I'll buy you a new ball. Renee. Go help your dad with the Rabbit."

"Dinner's ready!" Sue shouted.

As the kids went in, I spotted a pale being watching from the forestline. It had blood red eyes and a disgusting bleachy smell to it.

"Sammy, let's go." I ran toward the forest with Sam and we phased in perfect synchronization.

We ran after our prey, ready to kill. Ready to protect the twelve kids eating Christmas dinner and the people of La Push.

This was our life. We had been selected as shifters and tasked with the hard obstacles and losses along the way because we were strong enough to live it. We had been selected as the protectors of our people because we could endure the emotional and physical pain.

Everything bad and good that happened in nineteen years to us, every emotional pain we'd faced, had brought us together.

We were one, big happy family of imprints, kids, and wolves, all because I had found 'the One.' This was our life. This was our future.

This was our legacy.

And that marks the end of The One. I wish I didn't have to end it here.
