Chapter 1 - Descent Into Darkness

God said, 'Give me light!' But darkness still reigned on the other world. That was not so good, God thought, but he decided to leave it for the moment. He would have to check with the Others, though.

The young man sank through the greenish substance meant to absorb the energy of the portal's opening. His mind was fading fast, but he knew he would wake up again—only to experience his ba dissolving with his body, leaving behind no trace of who he had been.

With a soft bump, he hit the bottom of the glass tank.

Through the murkiness, he saw distorted shapes shifting about in an increasingly frantic fashion. Suddenly a hand appeared on the other side of the glass pane, scrawling on a script in a haste.

He did not care what it might say. He could guess, anyway. In a last effort, he scratched a hieroglyph into his palm, using a fingernail he had sharpened in captivity. He smashed his hand against the glass, then his mind dropped away.
