After The Crash

Chapter 10

It's been about 3 months since we found out Jess was pregnant and she was starting to get a baby bump. Jace had seemed to calm down and the colony had given the two their own apartment. We were currently over helping Jace get things set up while Jess was at work.

   "I wish she'd just take a break." Jace sighed

   "Yeah, but you know that's not how Jess works." Mark laughed

   "I know. She needs a kick in the ass." Jace giggled

   "I'll pass the message along to her later." Malcolm laughed as he hung a photo on the wall

   "Isn't she working in the quarantine center today?" I asked

   "Yeah. She's one determined chick." Malcolm laughed

   "She makes me nervous." Jace smiled

   "Hey man, you're the one who fucked her." Mathew laughed

   "Shut up. You work for me." Jace yelled laughing as he nearly fell off the chair he was standing on

   "I know. Can't believe I work for a kid." Mathew said calming down from his laughing fit

   We continued preparing the apartment when a voice came across Jace's radio and the alarms to the colony sounded.

   "There's been an outbreak at the quarantine center." The voice said

   "Jessica!" Jace yelled grabbing his knife as he ran out of the door

   "Shit." Mark said quickly following

   Malcolm, Mathew and I quickly grabbed our weapons and ran after the two. When we reached the quarantine center the doors to the inside were locked.

   "Jess! Where are you?" Jace yelled through the glass

  Jace pulled at the door frantically as we heard gunshots from inside. I watched the horrifying scene as blood spattered across the windows. 

   "Jessica!" Jace continued yelling

   It seemed like it had been ages when the sirens stopped and the auto locks on the doors released. Jace flung the door open and searched around for his girlfriend.

   "Jessica!" He yelled into the empty room

   "Jace? I'm over here! My leg's trapped!" She called to us

   I watched Jace jump over a support beam that had fallen on the floor as he dropped to his knees.

   "Jess." he said letting out a sigh of relief

   "I'm okay, but can we get this off my leg?" She asked softly

   The 5 of us lined ourselves up down the beam and lifted as Jess pulled her leg out from underneath. Jace dropped next to Jess as he looked at her broken leg.

   "Jace, stop worrying so much. I'll be alright." She smiled

   "I always worry about you Jess. It's how I've kept you alive." He smiled "Malcolm, take care of Jess, I'm gonna go make sure we're safe."

   Malcolm nodded as he bandaged Jess's leg. Mark, Mathew, and I helped clear a path for Jess to get out. However our attention was quickly pulled off our task when we heard Jace scream. I was the closest to him and arrived first. Jace was on the ground clutching his arm, a zombie laying next to him.

   "Shit." I head Malcolm whisper next to me "We have to get him to the medical center." 

   Jace moved his hand to examine the wound. He had been bitten, and it was bleeding a lot. I ran over to him as the shock set in on his face.

   "Sean." He cried

   I pulled off my shirt, wrapping it around his arm as a tourniquet to help the bleeding.

   "I won't get to see my baby Sean." Jace cried into my arms

   "You're gonna be alright Jace. We just have to get you to the hospital." I told him trying to lift him

   I knew there was no way I would be able to lift Jace, I had to find Mark. I left Jace and quickly found Mark, helping Mathew.

   "Mark, I can't lift him." I said feeling myself begin to panic

   "Lift who?"Mark asked confused

   "Jace. He was bitten. I-I can't lift him." I said trying my hardest not to cry

   "Where is he?" Mark asked softly

    I lead Mark to Jace who was now unconscious. Mark gently picked Jace up.

   "I already called it in. Get him there quickly." Malcolm told us "I can cast Jess here."

   Mark nodded walking quickly towards the hospital. Once we made it a doctor took Jace away on a bed and told Mark and I to sit.

   "Who now of all times did this have to happen?" Mark asked

   "Because he was emotional. He's always numbed his emotions out, the less human you are, the less distraction you have." I reminded Mark

   "Fuck." He sighed as he put his head in his hands

   "He'll be alright." Malcolm said as he set Jess on a chair  

   "How sure are you of that?" I asked

   "He's not the first person we've used the cure on. He's going to be okay." Malcolm assured me

   "What happened to him?" Jess asked

   "He ugh... he was bitten." I said softly

   "No." Jess said

   She looked devastated as she hugged her knee to her chest, tears rolling down her face. I walked over and sat next to her, wrapping my arms around her gently.

   "I can't lose him." She sobbed

   "I know Jessica. It's going to be okay." I told her softly

   After an hour or so the doctor walked out, a smile on his face.

   "I'm sure Malcolm told you he'd be alright. He's asking for Jess." The doctor smiled

   Jess carefully got up, grabbing the set of crutches the hospital had given her, and she followed the doctor, Mark and I just behind her.

   "Jessica." Jace smiled as we entered the room

   "You're such a fucking asshole." She cried as she hugged him

   "Hey man, I tried to fend it off but I guess i'm just to hot." Jace laughed

   "You're a cunt." Jess laughed

   "No, I'm a bastard, not a vagina." Jace said stroking Jess's hair

   "How dare you correct me after you almost die." Jess giggled

   "Pa, you could have at least gone home and gotten a shirt." Jace said laughing

   "I could have, but that takes effort." I told him "Besides, I have a great one pack."

   "Yeah, they go great with your plus one biceps." Mark laughed

   "Get a room." Malcolm told us, throwing a shirt at me

   "You're just jealous." I laughed putting the shirt on

   "Sure. That's it." He smiled as a pair of hands wrapped around his waist

   I gave him a questionable look as he turned around and kissed the woman behind him. 

   "Sorry Sean, this is Marissa." Malcolm said in
