PTSD is the result of exposure to a single traumatic event which leaves a trauma.
CPTSD is the result of prolonged exposure to traumas which can be multiple traumatic events or the same event repeated for long periods of time.
CPTSD is usually the result of long-term childhood abuse or neglect. The child's brain is less developed than an adult's brain. This means children don't have a developed brain to help deal with trauma. They develop their own coping mechanisms which are often destructive. Adults can experience severe trauma but they often have a developed and healthy brain to fall back on.
