Trauma is a distressing or upsetting event which has lasting effects.

It is important to note that the threat or danger does not need to be real. It can be where a person reasonably believes they or someone close to them is in danger. It can also be simply where a person firmly believes there is a danger.

You also don't need to be injured physically to experience symptoms of CPTSD.

Trauma can come from a wide range of events.

Examples of one-time traumas include:

Natural disasters
Rape
Accidents
War events
Sudden death of a loved one

Examples of prolonged trauma include:

Rape
Any type of abuse
Chronic neglect

Prolonged trauma is often trauma that can last for months or years at a time.

PTSD is when a one-time traumatic event occurs.

CPTSD is when prolonged traumatic event occurs.
