Trauma is a distressing or upsetting event which has lasting effects.
It is important to note that the threat or danger does not need to be real. It can be where a person reasonably believes they or someone close to them is in danger. It can also be simply where a person firmly believes there is a danger.
You also don't need to be injured physically to experience symptoms of CPTSD.
Trauma can come from a wide range of events.
Examples of one-time traumas include:
Natural disasters
Rape
Accidents
War events
Sudden death of a loved oneExamples of prolonged trauma include:
Rape
Any type of abuse
Chronic neglectProlonged trauma is often trauma that can last for months or years at a time.
PTSD is when a one-time traumatic event occurs.
CPTSD is when prolonged traumatic event occurs.
