Raisin

The sun is nice today;

just enough heat and light

to send nourishment

through the thick green veins

of my vine.

I soak it in,

turning plump and purple

as my smooth skin stretches and grows.

The sun is too hot today.

This morning, rough hands

plucked me from my vine.

Now I am surrounded by

others like me,

all dying under this cruel new sun

together.

I miss my vine.

There is no sun today.

At least, not that I can see

through the walls of my cardboard cell.

It wouldn't matter if there was.

I am a sticky, shriveled shell of myself,

waiting like all the others

for the hands to pluck me from this temporary home

as they plucked me from my vine.
