Sunset

At the end of the day
Like every other,
She hurries up the steps
Feet one after another

She reaches the last one
Landing at the platform
Panting and heaving
Yet still, she pushes on

She pushes open the door
And steps into the light
The last of the day
The start of the night

Her eyes dart to the side
To the edge of the sky
Where the sun goes down
Saying a one last goodbye

With a pang in her heart
She requests it to not go
The fleeing bits of light
Fade faster than before

She sees the birds flee
Flying back to their homes
Away from the dark
From the dangers unknown

She turns back to the sun
And begs it to stay
Don't melt into the night
Let it still be day

She fears the dark times
'Didn't want to go back there
Where the black claws grab her
And cut off her air

She would not go back
Into the cradle of night
In the arms of the beast
'Gainst whom non had won a fight

A read slips from her eye
And the thought of the dark
Nothing can come save her
Not a staff nor an ark

She climbs onto the ledge
Trying to stay in the light
Not ready yet to let the sun
Disappear from her sight

But just like everyday
The sun doesn't hear her plea
It keeps going down
Almost as if with glee

She raises on her toes
Trying to catch a last glimpse
But then the darkness takes over
Another breath, and she slips
