Good afternoon everyone! This part will be about prepositions. I will list as many as I can for you guys, but I might miss some. Enjoy :)
Prepositions in English can be challenging especially if you are new to learning English. With time and practice though it will eventually be very easy.
A preposition is a short word or words that are usually in front of a noun. A noun is a person, place, or thing. Each preposition can be used in a different way... not every proposition has one right way to use it in the English language. If you have any trouble understanding them refer to the "definition" or description of each preposition in the definitions section of this part of the book.
Prepositions:
Aboard, about, above, across, after, against, along, amid, among, around, as, at, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, besides, between, beyond, but, by, concerning, considering, despite, down, during, except, excepting, excluding, following, for, from, in, inside, into, like, minus, near, of, off, on, onto, opposite, outside, over, past, per, plus, regarding, round, save, since, than, through, to, toward, towards, under, underneath, unlike, until, up, upon, versus, via, with, within, without. (There's probably more)
Explanation for each one: (Each sentence is its own example. The period or other punctuation mark indicates the end of the example.)
Aboard: Welcome aboard our boat. Aboard the bus so we can leave we are going to be late.
About: Do you want to learn about history? I have learned about you before.
Above: The banana is above Jeremy's backpack on the shelf. The skyscraper is way up above all the other city buildings.
Across: They are sitting across from each other. The store is across the street from my house.
After: Can we meet up after work today? I will talk to you later.
Against: We are playing against the California soccer team today. The wind is pushing against the bird house outside.
Along: The walking trail is right along the side of the forest. My friend and I get along very well.
Amid: It was hard to concentrate in the cafe today amid the loud music and soccer team that were there.
Among: Among everything that happened this year it was great.
Around: The walking trail loops all the way around the lake.
As: I love chocolate as much as I love the outdoors. As soon as I left the school building it started to rain.
At: We waited at the bus stop for the bus to arrive in the morning.
Before: Before I go to sleep at night I turn off my light.
Behind: The performers were behind the stage waiting for the music to start. She was texting behind her binder, but the teacher didn't notice.
Below: She stored her shoes below the coat rack in the cubby holes.
Beneath: Beneath the ocean waves there are sea creatures. Beneath the seats of the car there is dirt.
Beside: My dog is laying down beside me on the couch.
Besides: Besides the fact that I passed all my exams my mental health is not good.
Between: There is a storage compartment between the two front seats of the car.
Beyond: Look beyond all of the bad things and you will find good.
But: The class got 100% on all their exams, but they all cheated.
