PART 5: STRANGER DANGER
Mama always said:
Child, when you see a stranger,
Run from the danger.
Do not say a word,
For like a sword,
It can be used to hurt you.
Keep mum to all the questions,
The ones they're sure to ask.
Do not believe whatever lies they say,
For they're there to slay,
So make sure you do not stay.Papa joined in, warning,
Child, when you see a stranger,
Run for your life.
You never know which he is,
A friend or a foe,
Take three steps back,
Whenever you see a stranger close.
They may smile,
But that means, run for miles
Because venom, hides behind their warm smiles.I nodded my head in silent agreement,
Even through my confusion, much to their enjoyment,
As an obedient girl, I heeded to their voice,
Not like there was much of a choice.Times later, I met a stranger,
But this one posed no danger.
That, I was sure of,
Their smile was not warm,
But there was compassion in their eyes
And they assured me of better thingsI figured that this stranger was an exception,
His expression betrayed no bad intentions
Therefore, I did not run.
Instead, I stayed,
Going against all I had been ever taught,
But was it worth it?
Come, let's find out."~Anjola Omoniyi, The Bridge.
