Edge Of The Universe

Prologue

Ring, ring. 

John picked up the phone.

"Hello", he said.

"Hello Commander", announced an excited voice.

"Hello Mark"

"Commander, we, we found another planet that might be able to support life!"

"Really?" John said, happiness filling him up. Everybody knew that the earth was going to die soon. The scientists have been working 24/7 trying to find another planet. They were going beyond the solar system now. Nothing so far had worked. Even Mars, which humans had high hopes for. "That's great news..." he said, struggling to keep calm, who should he tell first, his family, his friends, his-

"But there is a slight problem..." Mark said, interrupting his thoughts.

"What is it?" John's happiness deflated like a popped balloon.

"We were researching it-" Mark took a deep breath, "it seems to be at the edge of the universe." John spit out the coffee he was drinking.

"The edge of the universe, you gotta be kidding!" John stood up, pacing. "No, no that can't be right, the universe goes on forever." He took a sip of his coffee, thinking deeply.

"Well it appears to not sir", Mark said sounding a touch unsure himself, "And according to our research, it would take 70 or 80 years to get there, maybe even more".

"MORE?" John said, spitting his coffee once more.

"Yes sir, and we are not sure how to get there." A deafening silence took over the room. After a while, John spoke up,

"Well, it seems clear we will have to send kids." He said slowly

"KIDS?" It was now Marks turn to be surprised.

"Well, babies to be exact." John kept on talking, "and we could..."

But Mark had stopped listening. It was easy to see he thought that unbelievable. Kids! The whole world's fate rests in a bunch of little hands! If they fail, the human race might die. What a huge responsibility for them, and what a huge choice for us! "And we might use the T.S.E, and of course-" John chattered away, But one word stuck out at Mark,

"The T.S.E?" He repeated. "But we have not made a copy on it yet!"

"Well, if it is going to take 80 years we have got to act fast." John explained, "Ask the healthiest and strongest families you know and get around five people to accompany them, I volunteer".

"B-But the T.S.E!" Mark said again

"Mark, desperate times call for desperate measures." John said, "Now we have to act fast, see you later."

CLICK

"Is everyone here?" "We have two doctors, correct." "Affirmative, sir" "A captain and chief pilot." "Right again sir." "One very skilled Babysitter?" "Yes, sir" "How about the T.S.E" "Have them, sir" "The inventor" "He is here, sir." "Okay ready"...

3, 2, 1, BLAST OFF!
