Jealousy

Taylor's upset. Irrationally and undeniably upset. She'd thrown a New Years party to kick off 2018 and had honestly been really enjoying herself, that is until she'd seen Joe talking to one of his female friends, Rebecca. It was astoundingly clear that she was flirting with him, and yet he'd made no effort to stop her - just continued laughing and smiling. It bothered her, more than it should have. Taylor knows deep down that he hadn't been doing anything wrong, that he probably didn't notice the flirtation, but she still feels angry and upset, she'd tried so hard to continue having a good time with their friends, but her heart just hadn't been in it. Beneath the anger she's scared, scared because she'd been hurt before. And that fear is causing her fury to rise, her inability to think clearly. She feels incompetent compared to Rebecca and she hates it. Hates that she feels this way. Hates the angrily bubbling jealousy building inside her. Hates that she knows Rebecca could give Joe everything she can't.

Joe closes the door behind the last of their guests, a huge smile on his face as he turns to face Taylor.

"That was such a good party babe!" He seems so happy, clearly having had such a good time. He begins walking over to her but Taylor just folds her arms across her chest.

"Yeah...you and Rebecca seem pretty close." She says shortly, choosing now to make clear to him that she's annoyed. She sees Joe stop in his tracks, his brow furrowing.

"Well...yeah? We're good friends I guess." He's so oblivious, and it annoys her. Taylor rolls her eyes,

"She was flirting with you Joe!" She should've left this be. Her rational brain knows that none of this matters, but she's not thinking very rationally right now. Joe groans, clearly she's annoyed him now too.

"No she wasn't! And even if she had been, what does it matter? I love you." Taylor knows he's right, but she's too far gone, too angry to see reason. She's blown all of this up in her head, all night long, and now she's exploding.

"That's not the point! The point is that literally everyone wants you and you're too god damn blind to see it. One day, you'll find someone better than me and you'll have no problem getting her and then poof, you're gone!" She yells, her fears blurting out of her mouth in her anger. Joe throws his hands in the air, clearly frustrated.

"Taylor. I have told you so many times to stop saying that, stop reducing what we have! Stop accusing me of doing the worst, I'm here. With you. Because I love you! You're being relentlessly overdramatic again, just for the sake of it!" Taylor feels the furious jealously rising in her, she can't control it anymore, can practically feel her skin turning green.

"No I'm not!" She bursts out. "Rebecca is way hotter than me! She's way better for you than me in every single way. So just do yourself a favour and run off with her now before it hurts MORE later!!" She screams at him, tears blurring her vision. She runs out of the room, not waiting for a response. She feels tears flowing down her face now, her breathing heavy. She notices that Joe doesn't follow her, which is probably for the best given her current state of mind. She doesn't get like this very often anymore, not since Joe came into her life. But occasionally she still gets triggered, believing that she could never be enough for anyone.

Taylor sees the ladder to their attic is down. Someone must've accidentally opened it during the party, unsurprising considering how drunk everyone was. She climbs the ladder slowly, hoping that she'll be able to hole herself up in here for a while - really not in the mood to deal with much else. As she lifts herself up into the attic, she quickly realises that her and Joe had never cleaned away their stuff. The white sheet is still hung, the projector clearly still in the perfect position. They used to spend so much time up here, just tucked away in their own little world, watching home movies the two of them had made during the beginning of their relationship. It had always been so nice to reminisce. Taylor sits down on an old suitcase, hitting play on the projector. Immediately she's bombarded with the old videos that Taylor had taken of Joe, and him of her, as they appear on screen. She feels more tears slip down her face as watches how happy they both are, how in love they both are. She's screwed up. Big time. She knows she shouldn't have said what she'd said, but she just hadn't been able to help it. When she gets so worked up like that, she easily becomes overdramatic, consumed in anger and jealousy. Mostly because of her own insecurities. He hadn't actually done anything, god she's so insane.

As she sits there, watching these videos, she's reminded of how much Joe really loves her, how different he is from everyone else. He cares about her in a way no one ever had before. Suddenly, she hears someone climbing up the ladder. As he reaches the top, Taylor just looks at him, tears still staining her cheeks. She can't find the words to say to him. He simply moves wordlessly towards her, sitting down next to her. Taylor's grateful he isn't here to yell, or prove his point, or ask about her outburst yet, she's not quite ready to explain it. She lets her head rest on his shoulder, relief washing over her as she feels his head rest on hers. She sighs softly, happy he's not super mad at her. The videos continue playing for a while until they stop, and a silence falls over the two of them. Taylor closes her eyes for a moment, tears still spilling out of her eyes as she focuses on his warmth.

"I'm sorry for my outburst. I didn't really mean it, you're right, I was being overdramatic." She whispers. Joe gently wraps his arm around Taylor, pulling her close to him. She nuzzles his neck softly with her head, feeling an immediate peace wash over her.

"It's okay, you don't need to apologise." He murmurs softly, gently rubbing her skin with his thumb. "I'm sorry you were feeling insecure, I love you so much Taylor. You're beautiful, kind, generous, smart, hardworking and the perfect woman for me. I'll never want anyone else because I have you, and you're everything I want and need." Taylor feels tears slipping down her cheeks again, happy ones this time. He understands. She's always amazed that he just gets her, even if she's offered no word of explanation.

"Thank you." She whispers, lifting her head up to look up at him, before gently pressing a kiss to his lips. Joe smiles softly at her, wiping away her tears, gently tucking stray pieces of hair behind her ears. "I love you too. Thank you for staying, thank you for understanding." She murmurs, wrapping her arms around his neck, holding him close. She feels his arms wrap around her waist and she just melts into him.

"Of course, love." He says softly, pressing a gentle kiss to the side of her head. Taylor breathes in deeply, so thankful that he can see through her overdramatic outbursts, know what the real problem is and then they work through it. Together. He really is the best person for her, through everything. When he's down, or she is. They make a great team. They both just hold each other close for a while, simply exisiting in this moment, just the two of them. Eventually, when they loosen their grip, Taylor sees Joe look around the room. "It's been a while since we've been up here." He murmurs, gently cupping her face. Taylor smiles at him,

"Yeah, we forgot to pack everything away. I'm glad we didn't though, those videos were kinda cute to look back on." She says smiling, happy to see the grin back on Joe's face, clearly his good mood has returned.

"They are, aren't they?" He leans down to kiss her, pulling her a little closer as he does. She melts into the kiss, thoroughly enjoying his soft lips on hers.

"C'mon love, it's time for us to get some sleep." He whispers as their lips part. She nods, letting her head fall into his chest and grabbing his hand, squeezing it softly. She's not quite ready to leave this moment, she feels so warm and fuzzy. His hand gently rubs her back, happily taking a few more moments to soak each other in before standing up and climbing back down the ladder. His arm winds around her waist as they walk to bed, her head leaning against his shoulder. His warm embrace is something she never wants to be away from, just everything about him screams love and god she can't help but feel the need to be close to him all the time. She's so in love, and it's scary sometimes. Scary because she doesn't want to lose what has become the most important thing in the world to her. Nothing seems to matter if she can't have him. She honestly never believed she'd feel this way, then he walked into her life and everything changed. She turns to face him, reaching up and kissing him again. His hands fall either side of her waist as their bodies melt into one another.

"I love you so much." She whispers, pressing her forehead to his as they come up for air.

"I love you too." He murmurs, gently rubbing her shoulder. "I always will. Don't forget that." He presses a kiss to her forehead before picking her up off her feet. She squeals before dissolving into laughter as he runs down the hallway, her arms holding onto his neck for dear life. This is how it's supposed to be.
