"He could not know. Destiny has determined the surprise be Pavetta." Eist needed Calanthe to understand this. "When I heard that King Roegner had returned to find a child on the way... I abandoned all thought of claiming the Law of Surprise. I knew- I knew no woman would ever accept me like this." A tear fell from his eye and Pavetta touched his chest to comfort him.
"And so I waited. I waited until the twelfth bell when the curse breaks. I never intended to meet her. Just to watch from afar." He turned to the woman. "Until destiny intervened and our hearts collided." she smiled at him. "And at dawn, I awoke with her in my arms and me like this."
"Who are we to challenge destiny?" Eist whispered to Calanthe but I could hear it perfectly clear. "Life was saved, debt must be paid, or the whole order of the world falls apart." From the other side, she got yet another lecture. "Honor destiny's wish, or unleash its wrath upon us." Mousesack spoke. "There is no us! I bow to no law made by men who never bore a child! Is there not a man amongst you who does not cower before destiny?"
"You, Witcher... who has known monsters of every fang and claw, are you afraid too?" she asked Geralt and I looked at him. "No. I've seen mothers lash themselves raw over the death of a child, believing they crossed destiny, ignoring the stench of the 50 other children in the plague cart outside. Destiny helps people believe there's an order to this horseshit. There isn't. But a promise made must be honoured. As true for a commoner as it is for a Queen." Geralt spoke.
"I love Duny, Mother." Pavetta said to her mother but left her eyes on Duny. "I will marry him." she stated as a matter of fact and then faced her mother. She smiled back at Duny. "I will finally be free."
Calanthe didn't say anything but was lost in thought. She looked at Eist and handed him the sword she was still holding. She held her hand out for Duny to take it and so he did. She leaned to his ear. "Here's your destiny." She whispered and I could only hear it because of my enhanced senses.
She backed off and smiled at him. She pulled out a dagger and wanted to ram it into Dunys throat. Pavetta started screaming and sent everyone off, flying back. It was like Aard but in a more powerful way. The windows broke and Geralt and I stood close to a pillar. Besides Mousesack, we were the only ones standing. Geralt held onto my hand tightly.
Wind started to burst through the room. Duny and Pavetta in the middle of it, not being affected by it. She took his hands into hers and she started to speak elder what caused the wind to grow stronger. It was hard to stay against it and even look at what's going on. They started to float a few meters into the air where they turned in circles.
Geralt looked at me and let go of my hand and tried to walk towards them. A wave of Aard was what he tried but he got sent back to the pillar next to me. I grabbed him by his jacket and took a potion out of its pocket. He thankfully nodded, or at least tried to in this wind and gulped it down. It would enhance his Aard sign and could stop all of this.
He again went towards the two of them. He reached one of his hands inside the storm and managed to get a wave of Aard through. The storm stopped and Pavetta and Duny fell to the ground. It was dark because of Pavetta extinguishing all the candles with her storm. I rushed over to Geralt to check on him. He only put a hand on my shoulder to calm me down.
Pavetta and Duny got back up and Calanthe walked towards them at what Duny got closer to Pavetta. She gave her daughter a hug and in the meanwhile, all the guests could stand up again. "I thought your grandmother's gift had skipped you as it did me. It seems I was wrong. About so many things." She let her daughter go and spoke to everybody now. "Destiny has spoken! And I have listened. The Law of Surprise will be honoured. Pavetta will marry Lord Urcheon."
The crowd started murmuring but I was happy for Pavetta that she could marry who she wanted. I took Geralt's hand without anybody noticing, of course. Don't need everyone to know that we were a thing. "React poorly, and you won't just face the Lioness, you will be facing the sea hounds of Skellige. Because Queen Calanthe has agreed to my proposal of marriage." Calanthe gave him a look with raised brows but didn't say anything against it.
"There will be two vows here tonight!" Calanthe announced as her daughter got by her side for everyone to see and so did Duny. "Assume that's agreeable." Everyone nodded in agreement. Wouldn't be good to say anything against it. Jaskier was now standing beside me and I quickly let go of Geralt's hand at what he looked at me confused but realized as he saw Jaskier. "Delightful."
The hall good prepared by the servants. They got candles for everyone to hold who wanted. Geralt, Jaskier and I refused to. All people stood around the couples in a circle. Duny and Pavetta kneeled in the centre, Calanthe wrapping a cloth around their hands. Eist, Mousesack, Geralt and I stood in the centre as well.
"Pavetta. Duny. With my blessing I thee bind." The now wed couple faced each other and shared a kiss that would close the bond between them. Duny suddenly coughed and grunted. Pavetta started to panic and held her husband's hand. He laid on the floor growling in pain.
He wheezed on more time and then lifted his face. His curse broke. His face turned normal again. Pavetta smiled at him and so did he after he took off his gloves and saw that he turned human again. They shared another kiss. "The twelfth bell has not yet rung." Pavetta stated as for what her mother asked for its reason. "I think your blessing of this marriage has fulfilled destiny. The curse has been lifted."
