SCENE SEVEN
(Jeremy's house. JEREMY'S DAD sits at the kitchen table. JEREMY enters, carrying the shoebox. He looks good. He acts cold.)
JEREMY'S DAD
Where do you think you're going, private?
"Aw! Your dad is funny!" Brooke says. "My dad is a stick in the mud!" She huffs and folds her arms, Chloe nodding in agreement to her statement.
JEREMY
The play?
JEREMY'S DAD
What play? You're in a play?
"You didn't even tell your dad? I talked my parent's ears off about how I was in another play!" Christine says. Michael chuckles and rolls his eyes.
"Of course you did, Christine..."
Did you borrow my car on Halloween?
THE SQUIP
Disdainful denial.
JEREMY
I don't know what you're talking about.
JEREMY'S DAD
Then I guess I blame the car elves
Rich snorts, then calms himself down, realizing that it was not the right moment for laughing. This scene seemed really important.
JEREMY
Do whatever you want.
(JEREMY starts to go.)
JEREMY'S DAD
Did you take it to that party?
THE SQUIP
Wait.
(JEREMY stops.)
JEREMY'S DAD
I'm worried about you! You come and go all hours, doing god knows what, wearing these new clothes... What is going on with you?
THE SQUIP
Tell him the truth.
JEREMY
I took a pill-sized supercomputer called a Squip that's in my brain, and it talks to me, and it's made everything better!
Chloe says, "That makes you sound literally insane."
"What if that was the point...?" Christine asks, confusing them self.
JEREMY'S DAD
If you're not going to take me seriously-
JEREMY
Why should I?
"Oh thhit..." Rich snorts.
JEREMY'S DAD
Excuse me?
JEREMY
I'm supposed to believe you care? Look in the mirror! Ever since Mom left, you sit around like you're waiting for her to come back! If she did, you know what she'd find? A loser
"Is that your only insult?" Jade asks.
who's so afraid to have a life, he can't even put PANTS ON!
"That's your father, treat him with respect young man!" Issie tells him, causing Jeremy to bury his face into Michael's hair.
"Ugh... I was such a dick..." he says, voice muffled.
