Sunshine's POV

[4 years later, at the gate with the trio]

"What is this?" Emma asked as she hold the bar separating us from outside. I looked down at my small right hand holding at Ray's left one, wiggling them as I get nervous. Ray notices them but didn't say anything as he continue to stare past the gates.

"A gate. It connects the inside and outside." Ray said as he tighten his hold on my hand.

"Outside? We've never been outside." Emma said, facing Norman.

"We've been here all out lives ever since we were born." Norman said as he looked back at Emma. I looked at Ray hoping to ease my growing nerves. It did as Ray looked at me. Even though he is not smiling, I can see his eyes twinkle. I looked at Emma just as she looked past the gates again.

"That's right. Mama always said, 'Don't go near the gate or the fence in the back of the forest because it's dangerous.'" Emma said. I noticed Ray slightly looked down with a grim look on his face.

Of course. Ray already knew the secret. It's only a matter of time before Emma and Norman know it too. With Ray conducting behind the scenes. . .

"That's obviously a lie." Ray said.

"You think?" Emma asked rhetorically. "Hey, Ray. What would you want to do if you could go outside?" Emma asked out of the blue.

"No idea." Ray answered truthfully while looking down. I stared at him before squeezing his hand softly. Ray looked at me before squeezing my hand back. "How about you, Emma?" He asked as he looked back at Emma.

"I want to ride a giraffe!" Emma said, smiling enthusiastically. Ray sighed.

"Good luck with that." He said as he turned his back from the gates, switching his hold to my hand. I do the same, turning my back from the gates, switching my hand in the process.

"This bars. . . and this gate. . ." Norman trails, grabbing one of the steel bars form the gates. "What exactly are they protecting us from?" Norman finished as he hold another bar. Ray looked back at the gates, as did Emma. I looked at my worn out shoes, feeling guilty.

Now's not the time to tell you why. I cannot risk disturbing the plot of this world.

 *******************************************

As dinner pass by, me and Ray made our way to the library. As we walked to the hallway, I can't help but think about Mom and Dad at my own world.

What are they doing right now? Are they aware that I'm missing? Will Mom be worried about me? Will--

"Oi, you're thinking too hard." Ray cuts my train of thought. I looked around noticing that we are already inside the library. I looked at Ray with a distant gaze still present in my face.

"Am I?" I asked, though I already know the answer.

"Yes, you are. Your forehead have creases on it. You're gonna have wrinkles when we grow older." Ray said as he flicked my forehead. I winced and covered my forehead, tearing up a bit.

"Ray, you meanie." I said, my voice sounding slurred as I tried to hold back a fake laugh. Ray panicked, not knowing that I am faking it.

"No, I'm not! Now, stop cryin-- wait, you're faking it!" Ray accused. I burst in laughter as I dodged the incoming flicks from Ray. I stopped as I am cornered at one of the bookshelves. Ray opened his arms, preventing me from escaping. I covered my mouth as I tried to hold my laughter with no avail.
