I Am Not Racist.

Everyday we are born, but even in birth we are categorized
Innocence dimmed from the first breath, now that's the power of life

I was born innocent, you were born innocent, we were all born innocent
But now our innocence no longer defines us
That's the power of the world

Born as a free human
Raised in distinction
And then died in chains
That's the power of mankind

Even as we live day in and day out
We see the changes everyday yet no one screams out
Well I'm screaming out now
And yet I know that even as I do
The world will still remain the same

"The Pen is mightier than a sword"
That's what a human said once and now everyday
And yet we use the sword and ignore the power of the pen

Today I use my words and hope that they'll leave a greater impact

Time and life a constant battle but I am not in defeat yet

I am not racist, I'm just a human with words

Yet even as I stand alongside you

You choose to define me by my roots

You see my color and deem me a threat to society

You see my black nappy curls and deem it a nuisance

You see the strength and power in my hands and deem me a slave

You see in me the power to change things and then put me in chains

The difference between wrong and right has been severely diluted

And as you spill our blood for no reason

You deem it a favor to the world.

So now I ask you:

What favor have you done by killing a man speaking for his rights?

What favor have you done by killing a boy reaching for his hair brush?

What favor have you done by killing a boy with a phone to his ear?

What favor have you done by suffocating a man as he screams "I can't breathe!"

You say we are savages but I say the law is savage

These laws that are to be unbiased and truthful now stand with a side

These laws that are to bring our villans to justice claim our case irrelevant

These laws that are to bring us peace and closure now turn thier cheeks and leave us bleeding

These very laws created by innocent men no longer innocent

I am not racist, I'm just a human with words

A cycle has been put in place and I don't know when it will end

A cycle that has us in fear every time we get pulled over

A cycle that turns us to criminals even as we do no wrong

A cycle that puts us in bars as we try to defend ourselves.

I wonder:

Is it the jealousy you have for our color that turns you into monsters?

Is it the wonder you have for our curls that makes you bitter?

Is it the admiration that you have for our strength and power that makes you so brutal?

Or is it the simple fact that you see greatness in us that turns you numb?

Show no fear to your monsters and let them see you stand tall

Bleed like humans but never you ever go weak

Flaunt those braids and let them see true beauty

Never be afraid to be you because in that you shall become greatness

I am not racist, I'm just a human with words.

"No, no, no don't shoot!!"

But even as I scream all you see is black.

"Put your hands behind your head!!"

In the process of it suddenly my hands become a weapon.

This is it, the one moment my whole life has been boiling down to

The one moment all our lives boil down to

So I ask:

How many of us do you have to nip at before you no longer see a nuisance?

How many of us have to be dipped in bleach before you no longer see a threat?

How many of us have to labour and bleed before you no longer see slaves?

How many of us have to run and hide in fear before you stop putting us in chains?

But God how many of us have to die before ya'll get it?

We are not the problem, you are!

I am not racist, I'm just a human with words

Our homes have been turned into a battle field

Our husbands and brothers turned into commanders

Our mothers and sisters made to live in fear for our lives

Our children raised as soldiers just so they can live another day.

I am not racist, I'm just a human with words

Your jealousy, fear and hate for us has brought humans to this

You blame us for your wrong doings because we better at it than you are

You incarcerate us for your incompetence because it makes you feel better

And I hope it makes you feel better because color or not you just took a human's life

And if it didn't then, you're too far gone that words can't even describe you

And now, now only God can judge you.

I am not racist, I'm just a human with words

Be the light that they wish they could shine

Be the perfection that they wish they could be

Be the joy that they wish they could have

Keep that fire burning

Cause the only thing greater than hate is love

That we have, and that they can never take from us.

Be the change that we need to be every day

I am not racist, I am human

And I am black.

Don't be ashamed of who you are or what makes you you.

Wear that color like the shield and strength they see in it

Cause God loves you, So love you.

And so even as you try and cut us down

We'll carry the weight

We'll bear the pain and we'll bleed the blood

And at the end of the day we'll still be standing tall.
