"Papa, can you play with me?"

Tishva paused while cleaning the dishes. His daughter stared up at him with large, innocent sky blue eyes. The novel he had given to her hours ago was tucked under her arm, looking huge in comparison to her small stature.

"Did you finish reading it already?" he asked, amused by her eagerness.

Soraya bobbed her head up and down, her long, unkempt strawberry blond hair bouncing as she did.

"We can play after you clean that rat's nest of yours, and after you tell me what you learned from your readings."

"Okay!"

Soraya struggled with placing the book onto the kitchen table above her before sprinting up the spiral staircase with her scrawny stick legs.

Tishva looked around their home with pride as he thought back to the many months it took him to build everything by hand. It had taken him a shorter amount of time back then because he had used Earth Magic to aid him. Some Redwood trees had been kind enough to lend their bodies for making their cabin in exchange for Tishva spreading their seeds. Tishva had not only done so, but he even paid some townsfolk in Rivinsdeep to spread the seeds far and wide on their travels.

Mr. Thenayu sighed as his thoughts came back to their present situation. It had been three months since he had brought his daughter back to his cabin, and he had buried her mother and younger brother's corpses in the backyard. He noticed Soraya hadn't been eating much, and that she often had nightmares about her mother's death. She felt responsible despite him reassuring her that there was nothing she could have done.

He wrinkled his forehead as he thought back to bursting through a small hut door and seeing his wife bleeding and dying on the ground. His friend, who had been tending to Adonia, had said that neither she nor their son were going to make it because they had been so badly attacked by strangers who hated Casmerahns. Soraya had been sobbing in the corner of the hut, feeling helpless and not knowing what to do for her mother or younger brother...

What happened afterwards?

No matter how hard he tried to remember the details of how he suddenly appeared in Rivinsdeep with his daughter, it never made any sense. The lapse in his memory scared him. The only rough idea that he had of time changing was knowing that he had shaved his golden beard before seeing his wife, and that small scruff had already grown in around his jawline and chin when he suddenly appeared in town. It took him about three days to go from a clean shave to growing that same amount of hair on his face.

What transpired during that time?

He tried picturing his friend's face and voice, but those, too, were out of focus and disjointed. Who had been there helping Adonia?
