BLAISE

The school director’s eyes grew bigger as if he already learned my additional capability. “Y-You mean . . . synesthesia?” he asked, stammering because of absolute shock.

I cracked a smile. He’s right.

I had this rare condition called synesthesia. Wherein if one of my senses triggered, there’s another sense stimulated as well. There are various forms of this neurological condition, and I had emotion-color synesthesia. I can see people’s feelings. Everyone’s emotions manifested themselves to me in colors or lights.

It’s not a disorder nor detrimental. I did not perceive this condition as an impediment, but a gift. An extra capability, in my own words, that I wouldn’t want to miss.

I was about to respond to the director’s question when someone interrupted. Phew!

“Sir,” said the woman, probably in her early twenties, who was also wearing a formal suit. I then noticed the badge on her chest. SHS-C? She must be the senior high school coordinator.

She cast a glance at me then turned her head back to the school director. “My apologies for interrupting your conversation.”

“It’s okay. What is it?”

“I just came here to remind you, sir, that the meeting will start at exactly three o’clock.”

“Ah, I almost forget about that one.” He then faced me. “I’m sorry, Ms. Hakenson, but I’ve got to go.”

I nodded. “Okay, sir. Salamat po sa oras n’yo.”

Ngumiti lang sa akin ang school director at ang senior high school coordinator bago nila ako tinalikuran. Tiningnan ko silang dalawang naglakad until they disappeared from my eyeshot.

Siya nga pala, I saw a violet light flashed on his face earlier. He’s scared, huh? I wondered kung ano’ng ikinakatakot niya sa akin. Was he afraid of me having this condition—a special ability? I really don’t know but there’s something off with the school director. And I’m going to figure it out soon.

Like I thought earlier, I’ve decided na mag-dorm na lang. My dear sister assented then said that it’s a great idea raw kaysa naman daw mag-commute ako araw-araw. Ang hassle niyon. ’Buti na lang at tinulungan ako ni Kavin na magbuhat ng mga gamit ko. I wondered if may mas mahalagang bagay pa siyang gagawin kaysa rito. I mean, he’s the president of the student government, after all. ’Di ba siya busy?

The next morning, I found myself at our classroom, listening to our Oral Com instructor. He tackled about the two models of communication.

“Transactional model is a two-way process,” said our instructor, “consisting of six elements such as source—producer of message, transmitter—encoder of the information into signals, channel—the medium or the means, receiver—decoder of the information, destination, and feedback—response provided by the receiver.”
