nini wiped down the table that she had served as ej took orders from other customers in the diner
she looked up at the clock and saw that it had just turned to five o'clock right before the bell of the diner's entrance rang signaling someone had arrived
ricky walked in with his coat on and saw nini making her way around to the counter when she noticed he was here
"hi," he breathes as he sits at the stool in front of her
she glances up at him "hi,"
ricky inhaled deeply before opening his mouth again "uh-are you ready?"
she nods lightly before taking her apron off "i just have to do something,"
ricky nods an 'ok' as she walks past him and towards the tall raven-haired boy walking towards the counter
he saw them interact and how he said something to make her laugh before she playfully shoved him
ricky quickly looked away when he saw her coming towards him, taking her backpack
"so, i was thinking of going back at my house so that we can just get right to it." he tells her
nini looks up at him and nods after a few seconds of thinking "okay, let's go." she says
the boy nods and ej gives him a small smile 'hello' before the two make their way out of the diner and towards his car
the two rode silently with a few songs from the radio coming through as ricky focused on the roads ahead of him and nini on the window, looking at the winter weather outside
they arrived at his house and she had a part of her surprised at how - normal - his house was
she was definitely not expecting something like this.
ricky saw that his dad wasn't here since he probably had another hour left of work today
he knew that nini was thinking all sorts of things about him but honestly he didn't really care as they both made their way towards his front door
he lead her to the living room while nini looked at the different pictures on the walls
they were all of ricky with his dad when he was a child, a toddler ricky with an instrument in his hand or a early teenaged ricky with a little football
she didn't know that he had an interest for music. she felt as though he would be the person embarrassed of it or find it stupid and uninteresting
"do you want something to drink?" he asks from the kitchen as she sits down at the dining table
"uh-no, i'm good." she answers
he comes back with a glass of water, sitting down next to her
"okay, so we should get started." he says
nini nods and they both start planning the assignment individually and in silence
they didn't properly talk about their argument from yesterday and you could tell there was still tension from it, but neither one of them wanted to bring it up
after an hour, nini was almost done with her assignment and she looked up to see ricky writing in a beige notebook that wasn't their english assignment
"what are you doing?"
he jumps at the sudden sound of her voice and quickly shuts the book "nothing."
she raises an eyebrow and sighs "this is an important assignment ricky-"
"spare me one of your lectures," he groans
"you obviously don't care about it enough to do something else-"
"what i'm doing is important too!" he defends
"then enlighten me!" she exclaims
ricky looks at her firm expression for a few seconds he swallows and slides his book to the side, further away from her and himself
nini shakes her head in annoyance "did you at least finish the planning?"
"yes." he says with a fake smile, handing her a piece of paper
she takes it from his grasp and rolls her eyes before reading it
"why do we start with the first chapter?" she asks
ricky sighs and raises his eyebrows "okay, look nini, when you're in elementary school, there's this thing called math? and-"
"no bowen." she sighs in frustration "i mean that we should start with the most important chapter."
he nods "oh, okay. fine. then the third one-"
"no fourth." she contradicts
he shakes his head "no, it's clearly the third one because the islanders-"
"the fourth one is when you see all the different types of relations come together." she shoots back
"see that's where you're wrong because the relations wouldn't be there without the-"
"can you not just agree with me for once?" she sighs in frustration
"i would if what you were saying was correct," he tells her
nini groans in frustration and takes a deep breath to regain herself "okay." she says calmly "how about we do both?"
ricky rolls his eyes "fine. let's just hurry up with this."
"something we can agree on." she mumbles as they both continue their work in silence
