It's not one of sadistic intention or one of being sorry. It's a smile of relief.

A relief that she wasn't the one killed or relief that this could be already over with or relief that the villagers were 'mercilessly' killed so they won't suffer another tiring day?

But it's not his problem.

Askeladd looks back to the hole of dead bodies, his eyes impassive at the scene.

The clouds move away and the moon shines on the horrendous deed that is happening. Askeladd thinks of Elena's smile- not in a loving way but in a way of curiosity.
