14. Fever

Eren's POV

I will never forget the last night me and Mikasa talked. How could I forget such a miserable New Year's eve? She pushed me away. Real bad, in a way she knew I will be broken.

Today is the fourth day of January. We are here right now in the orphanage where Akihiro really lives. Just later on, everything will be back to normal but not Mikasa and I.

"Eren, why don't you hand him over now?" A woman almost the same age as my Mom said and took Akihiro from my arms. Akihiro looked at me-confusion is visible in his eyes...

"Bye bye, Aki." Mikasa let out a deep sigh and turned her back and walked to the bus service that our school provided just for this.

I also let out a deep sigh and followed Mikasa to the bus where some of our friends are already chatting and laughing. Armin and Annie are reading a book together. I don't know why their faces have to be so close to each other.

I watched them both and saw Annie smile when Armin laughed slightly.

"What a creep, Jaeger." Mikasa said. She closed her eyes then leaned back, looking relaxed.

"They look happy. And by the way, have you considered Levi-san's offer?" I asked her.

"Yes. My training is every weekends. And if I do well, I will be participating on Trost vs Shiganshina. And if we win, we will be representing Paradis against either Marley or Eldia." The tone of her voice is different. Very different. It's cold rather than soft.

"Oh, how many days will you be away?" I asked her once again.

"If we get to fight against Marley or Eldia? Probably one month." She simply answered.

"What?! That is so long, will you be okay there?" One month is too long. It is too long to handle.

"It's still not sure, okay? So overreacting. Stop it." She said and let out a small laugh.

I guess we are back to being friends?

Friends..there is a part of me that's happy and there is a part of me that is not contented. I want more than friends. Not bestfriends but more than that.

Just thirty minutes after leaving the orphanage, I felt Mikasa's head on my shoulder. I checked to see if she is indeed asleep, and she is. It will be much better tho if she is awake.

"Sleep well." I said and patted her head.

I should man up and court her. I will not just get what I want without effort. But she already said it herself..she doesn't want something more than friends with me.

I probably need Armin's intelligence right now, but I know I will be the only one who will be able to solve this.

-At School Grounds-

Mikasa and I are just waiting for Mom and Dad to pick us up. They promised that they will be the one who will drive us to school and will also take us home.

"Eren! Mikasa!" I heard Mom's voice from afar. And there she is, holding hands with Dad. She took her hands from Dad's grip and ran to me just to hug me tight.

"Mom! You are acting as if I was gone for years!" I complained.

"You are still a little boy to me." She stopped hugging me and held my hands tight.

"By the way, today is your Dad's day off. And you know that it only happens once in a blue moon. So we will be having a picnic." She smiled.

"Mikasa, you look sick. Are you okay?" Dad said.

"No, I am fine Dr. Jaeger. My back is just a little sore." She smiled.

"Okay, do you want to stay home? Eren would go with you, Mikasa." Mom suggested and I am totally in.

"Yes of course. I could stay home with you if you want." I tried to hide my smile but I just can't.

"I would like to stay home. But I will be ruining your family day. I can stay home alone." She said.

"No, I really can stay with you. It's not bad right? Mom? Dad?" I said. I just want to go home and..rest.

"No, Mikasa. We'll just let Eren come with you." Dad insisted.

"I will just join you three." She smiled and Mom just nodded as response. We all went to the car and proceeded to where we are going to picnic.

When we reached the destination, Mom out the picnic mat on the ground along with the basket full of foods.

We all sat and started talking.

"Mikasa, are you sure you are okay? I just noticed that today is colder than usual, is it the weather that is making you feel sick?" Mom asked.

"I am fine, Mrs. Jaeger." She smiled. I guess her back usually hurts nowadays. Is it because of her work-out routine every morning? She always goes hardcore when it comes to exercising.

"Okay, then let's take pictures!" Mom stood up and and went beside a tree with Dad to take pictures.

"You are not feeling fine." I touched her neck to check her temperature and she is blazing hot. I made her stay where she is and went to Mom.

"Mom, I will be taking Mikasa to the car." I said.

"Okay, go on. Take care of her." She smiled and posed for the camera again. Dad said the car is open but he still handed me the keys.

I went back to Mikasa and held her hand to help her stand. We walked to the parking lot and when we reached the car, she quickly went inside and closed her eyes. I followed and made her lean on me.

"You are sick. Why are you saying you are fine?" I asked her.

"Because I am, Eren." Are we gonna have a fight again?

"I know you when you are not. And you are not okay right now." I just want to take care of her when she is sick. Is it bad?

We both stayed quiet. The car is just full of awkward silence. I saw her shiver a little so I lowered the aircon temperature and gave her my jacket. I even wrapped another scarf around her.

"Thanks." She said. I grabbed her and hugged her tight.

"Body warmth is better than any warmth. You need this right now." I said, and just seconds, I heard a soft snore from her.

I wanna stay like this forever.
