Davey quickly ate his breakfast and placed his plate in the sink.

"Someone's in a good mood," his older sister, Sarah, said as she picked up the plate and began to wash it. "What's going on?"

"Oh, nothing special," Davey replied, unable to wipe the smile off his face. "Just excited for work."

"I've never heard someone say their excited to spend all day outside hawking headlines before," Sarah said.

"Well, you've never done it before. How would you know what it's like?"

Sarah rolled her eyes. "Whatever," she said. "I have chores to do here anyways. I don't have time for this." Sarah picked up a laundry basket, and left.

Davey smiled as he moved to the door, putting on his hat and vest.

"Is something special happening today?" Les asked, approaching his older brother and putting his own hat on.

"No," Davey replied. "I'm just excited to see our friends."

"This is absolutely insane! You'se met your soulmate and your enemy in one day! That never happens!" Jason exclaimed. He and (Y/n) were leaving The Sun, papes in hand, ready to sell.

   "I know, it's absolutely crazy!" (Y/n) replied.

   "Got any idea who's who?"

"Our David's gotta be my enemy. He's so rude. There's no way someone like that's my soulmate. The other David - Davey for short - is sooo sweet and dreamy."

"You gotta see him again," Jason said. "You'se gotta."

   "I know. I know," (Y/n) replied. "But I don't know how."

"You said this kid woirks at The Woirld? Go there," suggested Jason. "Now. Before he leaves."

   "But—"

"No 'but's," Jason cut (Y/n) off. "Go!" He gave (Y/n) a small push on his back, and (Y/n) ran off towards The World.

(Y/n) had stopped running, but he was still walking quicker than normal. He didn't know what exactly he was going to say once he reached The World, but he knew he had to see Davey again.

I can't believe I didn't realize Davey was short for David! (Y/n) thought to himself as he made his way across the crowded streets. He must've realized he had my name on his wrist and I must've looked so stupid!

As (Y/n) walked down the sidewalk, he didn't notice he was being followed. The streets became less and less crowded as he got closer to The World, and he began to slow down his pace to catch his breath. (Y/n) felt someone grab his arm and the next thing he knew, he was shoved into a nearby alleyway.

"Aargh!" he screamed. He felt his body being slammed against a wall and his papers fell to the floor and landed in a puddle. Breathing heavily, (Y/n) looked up to see none other, than David Spence.

"What do you want?!" (Y/n) cried.

"Well, a little birdie told me that we are soulmates," David replied.

"What?" (Y/n) gasped. "No. No, you've got it all wrong. We can't be soulmates. We're enemies. We have to be."

"Now how could a cutie like yourself ever be my enemy." David was holding (Y/n)'s wrists up against the wall. (Y/n) tried to squirm out of his grasp, but David was too strong.

As (Y/n) began to fear the worst, he heard footsteps approaching and then someone punched David right in his face, causing him to fall to the ground.

(Y/n) stood frozen against the wall, as the person kicked at David. He didn't know who this boy who had just saved him was, but he was grateful he came when he did.

The boy stopped going at David once he was unconscious. He turned to (Y/n). "You'se okay?"

   (Y/n) nodded.

"Good. Good," the boy replied. He looked about (Y/n)'s age. "C'mon. Let's get out of here. It ain't safe in this alleyway." He went up to (Y/n) and slung his arm around his shoulders to lead him away from the alley.

"Thank you for that," (Y/n) finally said once they exited the alleyway.

"It's no problem," the boy replied. "I saw you had papes. You a newsie?"

"Yeah, I am. I work for The Sun," (Y/n) replied.

   "I work's for The Woirld."

"Oh I was just heading there actually, I wanna see if I can meet a friend there."

"Oh well, I'll bring ya there," he offered. "I'm Racetrack, but you can call me Race for short."

   "I'm (Y/n)."

"It's nice ta meet you, (Y/n)."

   "Nice to meet you, too."

The two newsies made their way to The World. Once they reached the circulation gates, there weren't many newsies left. There were a few scattered around talking selling tactics, but most had left.

Race left (Y/n) and made his way to a kid wearing an eyepatch.

(Y/n) scanned the area until he found who he was looking for. Davey was talking to another boy wearing a cowboy hat around his neck.

(Y/n) stood there. He wasn't quite sure how to approach Davey. His heart was racing.

The boy with the cowboy hat noticed (Y/n) first. He pointed him out to Davey and Davey turned to face him. He smiled and waved once he saw (Y/n).

   (Y/n) awkwardly waved back.

Davey turned back to the cowboy hat kid, said something to him, and then jogged over to (Y/n).

"Hey," he said. "What are you doing here?"

"I- um..." (Y/n) stuttered. "I-I wanted to see you again. I- um... I just... I don't really know how to say this but uh... I think we're-"

   "Soulmates?" Davey finished.

   "Yeah," (Y/n) said quietly.

"I think so, too," Davey smiled. "So... how 'bout a date? Tonight? At like... eight?"

   "Yeah! Sure. Sure," (Y/n) said.

"Great," Davey replied. "Now, if you'll excuse me. I need to sell with my brother. But I'll meet you back here at eight?"

   "Definitely," (Y/n) replied.

Davey called for his brother, quickly waved to (Y/n), and they left to go sell their papers.

(Y/n) smiled as he watched them leave, excited for eight o'clock.
