Angel on the battlefield

___

A distant sound of gunshots and explosions was ever-present. From time to time screams could be heard, some of them being orders, others being cries of pain.

That was just how war was. It was deadly, bloody, and chaotic.

And in the middle of the war's chaos was a boy.

His arm up in the air, as if trying to reach for the raven hovering many meters over him.

"Hey..." the boy's voice let out "...it's dangerous here"  he said, the comment seemed to be directed at the bird flying over his head.

"Fly away..."

"...somewhere...."

"far away..."

He closed his eyes for a moment, and when he opened them again, the raven was gone. He then moved his head from side to side, but still, the raven was nowhere to be found.

The boy tried to stand, but before he even had the chance to get his back off the ground, a hand was placed against his chest

"Don't move my child" it was a woman's voice "Your body is too weak" she said, in a calm and soothing way.

Her touch was gentle, and for a second, admits all the shooting and screaming, he felt safe. But it only lasted that second, for as soon as the comfort was there, it vanished again.

His eyes looked up to see the woman talking to him, there he was met with a pair of deep blue orbs "I'm sorry child" she said

"But you have to forget" she then placed her forehead against his.

Reiner looked down at the red ribbon in his hand "How long has it been?... about four years by now" he mumbled to himself.

The ribbon was fine silk, something a man like him normally wouldn't carry around. It wasn't actually his, it had belonged to his past lover Guinevere.

She used to tie her hair with this, and here he was, unable to even tie it around his own wrist.

He let out a low chuckle, thinking back to the time she had given it to him.

It had been during his time inside the walls, right when the two of them had decided to join the survey corps. Before she even knew who he really was.

He had wondered many times if she still would have loved him, had she known of his secret. But how could she? no matter how sweet, and forgiving she was, the thought just seemed unrealistic.

For who could forgive a murderer like him? He had killed so many, innocent, guilty, soldiers, and civilians. So, how could someone like her, ever love a man like him.

He lifted his hand up to his forehead, rubbing a little to ease the growing headache. She was gone now, why even bother still thinking of her.

He hadn't even been there to try and save her.

Reiner looked over his shoulder and saw the bearded blond getting ready for the attack as well. For four years he had been working with the man that killed her.

Zeke didn't even seem to notice the dirty glares he had been giving him over the years. Or maybe he thought it was because of something else.

His fellow warrior had killed as much as himself, so Gwen had just been a little addition to the blood Zeke already had on his hands.

The older man probably didn't even see her amongst the other scouts that day.

Admits so many other soldiers, some of them as outstanding as commander Erwin, and captain Levi, she would easily be forgotten.

No matter how much he wanted to, he couldn't just blame Zeke for what happened that day, when he was at fault too.

He had been the one that convinced her to join the scouts anyways. She had landed in the top ten and had originally planned on joining the military police.

But his dumb lovestruck ass just had to make her join. He'd been extremely selfish, using their love as an excuse for her to follow him to an early grave.

All of that for just a few months of being together. The time had definitely been the best of his life but had the pain and sorrow the followed been worth it?

He really wished he could change the past. They should have remained friends, he shouldn't have presumed a romantic relationship with her.

Then maybe she would have joined the military police, found another man, and had a family. But instead, she had chosen him, look where that had gotten her.

Now she was gone, and she would never come back.

He fought back the tears, tightening the ribbon even harder around his wrist. He then took a deep breath, in and out, blinked a few times, before returning his face to a stoic expression.

Zeke called out to him, saying to get ready.

He rose to his feet and checked his gear one last time, before readying himself to jump out of the aircraft.

His eyes fell to the knife in his hand, and then they looked out over the people fighting beneath him.

The war had been a good distraction, but now that it seemed to be coming to an end, Reiner dreaded going back to a life without her in it.

He missed her, so much it hurt. But he had to move on, for there were still people in his life he needed to take care of.

And no matter how much he wanted to end it all, he still had to keep going.

side note

I'm using Violet Evergardan as the face of my character Guinevere, and I just wanted to say that she does in fact have normal human arms in this fanfic.

Hope you enjoyed:)  ~Vannesa
