Monowi, Nebraska is the only town in the USA with an official population of one. The town is owned and run by 84 year old Elise Eiler. Yes, she pays taxes (to herself) and has given herself an alcohol licence. She is the mayor, librarian and bartender in the town.
The place is essentially a ghost town. After Elise's husband passed away in 2004 it left her on her own in the little town. The only actually place of business is the tavern she runs and she keeps a listing on all of the residential buildings just in case anyone does want to move in. However, the town is quite decrepit over the years. Still, Elise calls it her home and doesn't care to leave.
