Story:

Shen Jingbin just want to play Legends of Celestials and Demons, a virtual reality MMORPG game with real full body experience. Her start was already weird. Her chosen names for her character all rejected. Annoyed, she let the game randomly pick name for her. It is Nutjob. Her real name - Shen Jingbin - is a homophone of her in-game name, Nutjob, that reads as 神经病 (shen jing bing) - in Chinese.

Next, she can't upgrade her beautification so she downgrades it to the lowest level -99. She became the ugliest character in game. As compensation, she got the highest level of luck in the game: level 25. Her luck brings her to hidden quest then she become the lead disciple of her clan (Daoist).

Jingbin's experience in the game start a little bit unpleasant because of her appearance. Others bullied her. She has laid back personality and she actually really strong & beautiful in real life. Gradually she found her own friends in game and eventually husband. The novel is about their progress in game and also their real life.

What I like :

The game world is interesting. The mission and the storyline. I imagine myself playing and having fun.

I like the author try to keep it real, for examples: some of them are workers, some are students so there is limitation on when they can play the game. This is virtual reality game where the players can really feel sensation of the wind, feel the pain when they get hurt (the pain level is adjustable). One time, the players of one sect's pain level is reset at maximal because they lose in their mission and they were mass massacred. There's note on company board about players complaining the unexpected event and the company reply: it's still a game, the pain players experience is just like a pinch.

The love story is quite cute. You met somebody in game. You know her in real life. So you try flirting in & outside of game but the girl slow to realize. When Jingbin start having friends in game, their interactions are fun.

Jingbin's has older brother Jingchen. He played in game too. Their parents are super-busy-very-important-businessmen-flying-all-over-the-country so only both siblings live together (+ nanny). Both of them are good kids though. I like their interactions. They bicker often but also take care of each other.

What I don't like:

I want to ask the author: DO YOU HATE WOMEN???

Really the debate & talks around the characters appearance is so annoying. Guys it's a game and those are player's avatar. Even though it took player's real life appearance as a base to create the avatar's appearance. It's still an avatar and not real life person. Also most players use beautify tools too so they don't look like that in real life. It's unreal. So shallow. I almost stopped reading at chapter 40-ish but I checked the chapters count and saw it's only 130-ish (it's not. I don't know how can I get that number). I thought 'oh it's not that many. I'll continue reading'. By the time I reach chapter 150, I just realized 'oh wait the story still going on, what the heck it's 400 chapters.' At this point I enjoy reading the in-game mission so I continue until finished.

Jing bin in real life is very beautiful, very smart, talented etc. She's perfect. Jing bin's love interest is perfect guy inside & outside of game. They are perfect!

I don't like how other women is lacking. Especially her 'rivals'. They're all quite similar: pretty girls who petty for no reason & lack of brain. It's annoying to read.

Jingbin in game has highest luck. I won't say she doesn't work hard to level up but many times her luck factor too OP. To get the next mission, player have to find rare items. Jingbin: "Hey I got that item randomly". *roll eyes*

------

Overall, it's not a bad novel. Just maybe not something I will reread. This is the 2nd gaming novel I've ever read. (I've read 3-4 chapters of Love O2O just to compare with the drama.)

I can't help but to compare this with another Chinese novel with the same virtual reality MMORPG game I've read before: Half Prince. Technically the one I read was manhua version not the novel though. In Half Prince the lead is a woman whose in-game character is a good-looking guy. There are similarity in: grinding, teamwork, met in game friends & have fun, met people who take game too seriously, doing secret mission, met OP NPCs. I remember I enjoyed reading that manhua. It's funny and heart-warming too. The storyline is interesting although toward the end it become a little unrealistic. She has a cute pet, the little Bun bun. I want to read the novel version so I can share.
