When Mrs Richards, my creative arts teacher at the time, told me about the extra credit programme the school was running for learners interested in pursuing further studies in the arts, I was devastated to learn that it was a partnered project.
"Partnered?" I stuttered.
Mrs Richards folded her slender hands on her cluttered desk. "I'm really sorry, Landon. I know you like to stick to yourself, but... "
I sank into my seat.
"I'm sure there's someone you can ask," Mrs Richards insisted. "There are many learners in our arts programme..."
I gathered the glossy Arts Lives Here! brochure she'd given me, nodding. "No," I began saying. "I understand-I'll find a partner."
There was no way I'd be able to pass up this opportunity. This was my chance to get into the art programme at the University of Cape Town.
