[Gale's pov]

I lean in and kiss her, hard.

Her lips are on mine, and they're responding, she's responding, and just when I begin to hope- she stills.

I can't take advantage in this situation.

So I pull away, and she's staring up at me like a scared wild cat would, giving me a saddened smile.

What did I do wrong? What-

I'm desperate to ask her.

"I had to do that. At least once," I say in a hoarse voice.

She's still looking at me in this indescribable way, something I've never seen from Katniss.

You always know where you're standing when you're beside her.

Not now, though.

I walk away...

Looking back, I have no idea what this means or what I should do now.

When I hunt, I strike the moment I have a clean shot. The animal may escape, or I may hit them - but it's over in a matter of seconds. Because someone made a decision. I made a decision, and I'm aware that this requires a decision too.

The issue is, I'm struggling to make one.

She kissed me back, then she stopped, she looked sad, she was silent, and she's been ignoring me. That doesn't add up to something I know how to react to.

Aggh.
