Kids are known for using their imagination when the don't have anyone to play with,(cough, imaginary friends, cough) and so when the entity shows up the kid thinks it's just a friend who wants to play with them.
To the slender man this is the chance to gain the child's trust and so he plays along. Most parents (who live in urban areas or in forest) often don't really pay close attention to their children and think their child has just made an imaginary friend, and that's why most missing children are often last see in their backyards or even playing on the front porch.
