"I doubt he can hear us," came a soft whisper. "Doctors don't know what happens. Crock of shit if you ask me."

Necrobutcher...

Dead struggled to focus on the voices around him, recognizing each of his friends as well as two other's.

"I know he can hear us," a woman responded sharply. "He can hear us."

The second part sounded less convincing and Dead wondered if the woman was trying to convince herself or those around her. After hearing her talk a few more times, Dead recognized it as the voice of his mother; which meant the other male voice was his younger brother.

They came all the way here...I'm just burdening them...

His body felt numb, heavy, yet relaxed at the same time. While he was unable to move, he took comfort in the darkness that surrounded him as well as the silence that came when he, assumed at least, that he was alone or fading out of consciousness. Despite being immobile, there was no way of denying the sharp pain that throbbed in his chest.

Make it stop.

Half his body felt numb while the other screamed in agony. The sharp, burning sensation was all he could focus on. His mind raced, half panicked, half determined. There must be an answer to this pain, a way to make it stop. He took a moment to gather his thoughts, but even this proved a hassle and a pain as conflicting thoughts corrupted his mind. The pain became unbearable, the sounds that he had grown familiar with suddenly sounding further and further away as he struggled to remain conscious. It wasn't long before Dead finally succumbed to the darkness. The weight lifting off of his chest as he slipped further into the void, feeling finally at peace.

The dark sky was lit only by the milky whiteness of the moon above, the clouds forming various shapes as they hovered above, reminding him almost of a ground in the sky. All around the sounds of the night echoed through his ears and throughout the landscape. It was peaceful, yet eerie. While the distant chirps of frogs, crickets, and various other wildlife could be heard, there was also a faint howl off in the distance. The sounds alone brought on a sense of comfort. The usual noises of cars, people, and the general busyness of the world was gone; in its place only comfortable silence.

For the first time the air around him had no visible tension, no heaviness that projected itself onto him. It was a feeling unlike any other, a strange warmth settling into him as he took small glances at his surroundings, his eyes landing on a small puddle beside him on the weathered cobblestone path. The normally clear water was instead a deep gray.

Gray?

Taking a more careful look, Dead could see that the trees, stones, grass, and even the sky, had become monochrome.

He looked around, not really knowing what it could mean, why the life was draining out of everything around him.

Oh...

the simplicity of it hit him like a truck.

This is what death feels like.

He should have been happy. Finally so close to what he had been chasing

This is what I've been wanting so goddamn long for...

The sounds around him were suddenly silent, replaced by a fierce ringing in his ears as he crumpled to the ground fingers digging into the dirt beneath him.

So why am I scared?
