Chapter 57

Dying

Jax was with me every single day. Lagi niya akong binabantayan sa ospital. At alam ko... Alam kong nahihirapan siya. I saw how he was trembling, how he was trying so hard to fight the trauma.

"Jax, please go home. I'm fine," I told him.

His eyes were red. He looked so exhausted.

"I know you are having a hard time." I tried not to buckle.

"Hindi naman. Okay lang ako," aniya at ngumiti.

"Liar."

"Parang kagat lang ng langgam!" Jax said and smiled again. "Antik nga lang."

Tumawa pa siya pero hindi ako natawa dahil nasasaktan ako kapag nasasaktan siya. Ayaw kong nasasaktan siya.

Hindi pa ako pinapalabas ng ospital at walang kasiguraduhan kung hanggang kailan pa ako rito. The academy understands my situation. They will give me activities and lessons when I come back so I could catch up with the semester.

"I'm so sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Gonzalez," I heard the Doctor said. Mas idiniin ko pa ang pagpikit. "We're just not seeing the results that we would like to see."

"What do you mean by that, Doc? What should we do now?" Mom asked in panic.

"Her medications can only minimize the pain, but it cannot heal her. She needs to undergo surgery... But it would be very risky for her."

"You have to do everything, Doc! Please do everything to save her!" Mom cried.

Hindi ko kayang marinig. Ayaw kong marinig ang mga iyon.

I wasn't getting better and I needed a surgery. Those were the last things I heard... But the surgery doesn't mean that I'd surely live. I could die during it. I could die after it. It's very risky.

I'm so scared that the expiration date of my heart is getting sooner than I thought.

"Let's break up," I told him.

Mabilis siyang napatayo at lumapit sa akin. "Cali, hindi ka vlogger. Huwag kang prankster," aniya at tumawa. "Gutom ka, 'no? Anong gusto mo?"

I looked at him straight in the eyes. "I'm serious, Jax. I don't want to be in a relationship anymore. I don't have time for this."

"B-Bakit kailangan mo ulit gawin 'to, Cali?"

Agad akong nag-iwas ng tingin. I tried so hard to control my tears. I don't want him to see me cry.

Ginagawa ko ito para sa kanya. For the second time around, this is for him. I want him to have a better life, but it will never be with me. It will never be with a dying girl.

He still cannot contact his Dad. Kuya was already talking with some of our lawyers but so far, almost everyone was an ally of Attorney Ignacio.

"Leave me alone, Jax... I don't want to see you anymore," I said and looked on the other way. My eyes were watery already.

"Hindi ako naniniwala sa 'yo. Rule number 9, remember?" Ang boses niya ay puno ng pagsusumamo.
