And that's exactly what we did, the next day. We showed all our evidence and what we found on Mackey to Daveys parents

They sat silent for a few seconds "Mackey..... he's a cop, for Christ's sake. He's also been our neighbor since before you were born" Davey's dad said, "dad, every serial killer was somebody's neighbor-"

"That milk carton. That t-shirt and the storage unit? That- that doesn't prove anything, guys" Davey's dad said "how could you guys go along with this? Especially you Colleen, you always make sure they don't do stuff like this" Daveys mom said I scoffed

"we wouldn't have if it didn't make so much sense" Curtis said "yeah, and then when we were following him-" "Jesus, you have been spying on him?"

"Yeah, we had to!" Davey said "the more we watch, the more it all made sense," I said defensively "he goes jogging at 11:00 at night. He buys a ton of dirt every week. He keeps a spare car in a storage unit. Why would he do that? There was nothing in his garden when we dug it up but I'm-"

"you dug up his garden? Oh, goddammit, David. You guys are in deep, deep trouble. I mean that's vandalism, spying, stealing. I mean, that's unacceptable-" "I'm trying to save people" Davey said defensively "yeah, well, you're not!"

We stood quiet for a second "alright, we're gonna go over there right now and you're gonna apologize for all of this. And you better hope he doesn't press charges" Davey's dad said

I looked at Tommy worriedly Daveys dad grabbed the stuff and shoved it onto Davey "let's go," he said I sighed and followed him out along with the rest of the guys

We walked to Mackey's house, Davey's dad knocked on the door, and Mackey answered which meant my silent prayers weren't answered "Randall. Guys, Colleen, what's going on?" I shivered when he said my name

"hey there, Wayne. Listen, uh, the boys and Cole have something they need to tell you. And I want to apologize in advance. Just know that Sheila and I are as outraged as you are about to be" Davey's dad said "I'm sure whatever it is we can work it out" Mackey said

Davey stepped up "um... hey, Mr. Mackey. We just wanted to say we're sorry. You probably thought raccoons dug up you're garden and your garbage. It was us" Davey confessed "tell him why"

I sighed quietly and crossed my arms "a few weeks ago I thought I saw this boy in your house" Davey handed Mackey the milk carton "we were playing manhunt and I had this idea that... you were maybe the Cape May Slayer" Davey confessed again

"oh. Well. Uh...-" Mackey started laughing "I'm sorry, it's just the uh, guys at the station are gonna love this" Mackey said I threw him a dirty look "so who was the boy that was here?" Davey asked

"my nephew, Jamie. He was helping to renovate the darkroom" Mackey explained "I thought you didn't have family nearby..... And we found this in your shed" Davey handed Mackey the t-shirt "David" His dad warned, "you broke into my shed, too, huh?" Mackey said his tone becoming more sinister

"you don't have to answer any of this" Daveys dad said "no, it's fine, it's fine. We were hammering nails all day, he probably cut himself. Why don't you guys come in, we can call him, we can clear this up right now-"

"that is not necessary at all. Look, we just wanted to let you know what happened, and uh, the boys and Cole promise to fix everything that they damaged, no matter how long it takes, right?"

"Yes, sir"
"Yes, sir"

"Look, I appreciate the apology but honestly, no hard feelings. I remember what it was like to be young in the summer. It's hard to pass up an adventure" Mackey said "you are a better man than me, Wayne, thank you" Mackey and Davey's dad shook hands

Mackey and Davey's dad continued to talk so we all walked away "this doesn't change anything" Davey said I scoffed "are you high? Your summer's fucked. We may get out of this with just garden duty. I'm not risking the little of the good life I've got left" Tommy said

"yeah, Davey, spying on Mackey was fun and stuff but this is way too heavy. I'm out" Curtis said "guys! Go home. And I'm calling all your parents and will be telling them what happened. Go" I felt my heart sink

"what?" I questioned "go home, Colleen," he said I felt worry begin to take over me, I'd probably end up in a coma after the beating my dads gonna give me

We start to walk away and I visibly become slower "Cole? Are you ok?" Tommy asked "no. No, I'm not. He's-he's gonna kill me when they tell him" I stopped and started crying

"Cole, no he's not," Tommy said "yes, yes he is! I'm dead!" I sobbed Tommy pulled me into his arms "shhh... it's gonna be ok. You always handle what he does so well if he does anything you'll be ok" he ran his hands through my hair "I'm scared, Tommy" I confessed "it's ok" he comforted me

We stood there for 10 more minutes before he had to go, he assured me that I'd be fine and walked with me until his house

When I walked into my house my dad was sitting next to the phone with a glass of whiskey in his hand "dad, I can explain-" "sit down!" I moved to the couch and sat

"I give you freedom, I let you sleepover at your friend's house, I let you play outside with those boys... and you take advantage of it! You vandalized Mr. Mackey's property, broke into his shed, and stalked him, I am beyond disappointed in you" he stood up and started to undo his belt "no, please"

(Time skip past child abuse)

"I'm going to the bar, I can't bare to look at you," he said

I laid there for a few minutes until crawled over to the phone table and I grabbed the phone and dialed Tommy's number "hello?" It was Kyle "can I talk to Tommy?" I asked

"hold on" I waited a few seconds "hello?" "Tommy, can you come over?" I asked "Cole? Are you ok?" He asked "can you come now? Please" I said my voice cracking "yeah ill be there soon," he said and hung up

Tommy got there and helped me to my room he stayed with me until I fell asleep
