Karma stood before her mother's grave, her heart seething with anger at the world. The headstone bore the name, "In memory of Asahi Jambai." Clutching her umbrella tightly in her hand, she read the inscription over and over again, each repetition a painful reminder.

Only a day before her mission, her parents seemed to be getting along flawlessly. Just hours before she left, they were arguing, but she dismissed it as one of their usual, petty disputes. Their quarrels often revolved around insignificant matters, such as who would water the trees or which side of the bed they would sleep on. These disagreements typically resolved themselves by the next day.

However, on the day she departed for her mission, her parents had been avoiding each other, even as they walked her to the village's entrance. The fact that they decided to accompany her on this mission puzzled her. Karma had always completed her missions quickly, so there was no need for her parents to see her off each time.

Standing beside her mother's headstone, she bent down to place an arrangement of her mother's favorite flowers at the base. Her older brother loitered nearby, waiting for her to finish so they could return home.
