Jenny’s POV

I stretched and looked out the window. I didn’t realize I had slept so late. I stood up and was about to head to the bathroom when I heard someone knocking on my door. I was just a few steps away when I smelled my mate. My hand hesitated just inches from the knob.

Taking a deep breath, I ready both my wolf and my heart for the rejection I was sure was coming. I twist the doorknob slowly and opened the door. My mate was standing in the hallway holding a plate of food. And I could tell he was nervous.

Tapping him softly on his shoulder, I wait for him to turn around. He gives me a weak smile so I return it. “I, uh, I thought you might be hungry. I didn’t see you at dinner.” I take the plate and step back, motioning for him to enter.

He slowly steps into my room as I shut the door. I watched as his eyes take in the still made bed and the blanket on the floor. I sit the plate on the desk and sit back in front of the window. He sits beside me.

His eyes would look around the room before settling back on me and then he would look somewhere else. I pull a small notebook out of the bottom drawer of the desk and a pen. –What’s your name?

He quickly reads what I’ve written and smiles at me. “Sorry, I’m Titus Callahan. And you’re Jenny Rose.” I give him a smile and nod. “Why didn’t you wait for the Council to arrive after your pack was killed?”

-I didn’t know if the hunters were still around. And, I was taught by my dad that if he and mom were killed, I was to run away as fast as I could. So I did was I had been told to do.

“Would you be willing to move back to my pack with me?” I looked at him a little confused. –You’re…You’re not rejecting me? He chuckles and the sound sends shivers down my back.

“Rejecting you never came to mind Jenny. I don’t care that you’re not able to speak. You were made for me and I intend on keeping you.”

Looking into his eyes, I could see that he was telling the truth. I saw something else in his eyes that I couldn’t describe, but made me blush. We spend the next several hours getting to know each other better. It was pretty late when he left and I fell asleep where I was sitting.

I woke up just as the sun peeked through the window. I hated it when I over slept. I sat up and noticed that I was lying on the bed. Slipping to my feet, I couldn’t help but notice that my entire body ached.

Stretching, I smile when I hear my back pop. It confused me how I ended up on the bed, but then Titus’ scent hit me.

He must have looked in on me earlier and laid me on the bed. Dressing quickly, I brush and braid my hair. As I met my eyes in the mirror, I wondered for a brief second if I should cut my hair.

But just as soon as the idea registered, I shook it out.  It was one of the only things I had to remind me of my mother.

Making my way to the library, I couldn’t help but swear to never sleep in a bed again. I spent the whole day lost in a completely different world. It didn’t take me long to get the hang of reading again, and by the time I noticed that the sun was setting, I had already had a large stack of a verity of book beside the hidden window seat. Sighing softly, I pick a few up and begin the process of putting them back in their place.

I shut the huge oak door softly behind me. At the rumble of my stomach, I decide to raid the kitchen and I head in that direction. Just as I passed the den, I heard a soft, deep chuckle that made my knees feel like jelly. Silently stepping closer to the open door, I peek in to find Titus in the arms of another woman.

Lily growled softly at the sight of her hand on his arm. I bit my lips to keep the growl in, but I knew that they wouldn’t have heard anything. Get her hand off of our Mate. Lily demanded, and I was about to do just that when I noticed something.

The way that he was looking at her hit me. His eyes were shining and full of love. And my heart broke at the sight of that look. Why aren’t you moving Jenny?

Because he loves her Lil, can’t you see it? He doesn’t look at us that way. He probably isn’t rejecting us so he can have an heir. But he won’t look at us like that. I knew that I wouldn’t be what my mate would want.

You’re wrong Jen.

Am I Lily? Before I could say anything else, the woman’s quick movement caught my eye. I watched as her lips met Titus’. And I watched as he didn’t push her away. Instead, his arms circled around her waist and held her against him.

Lily became quite so I just spun around and hurried back to my room. Glancing to the left and right, I slip into my room and lock the door. Taking my bag out of the closet, I make sure that I gather only the things that I brought with me.

I quickly write the king a brief letter and open my door. Making sure the coast was clear, I sprint to the office and lay the letter on the screen of his computer. Once back in the room, I lock the door and pick up my bag.

Swinging the window open, I carefully slip out onto the ledge. Closing the window behind me, I jump down and land quietly on my feet. Without a look over my shoulder, I sprint off into the woods avoiding the patrols.

An hour later, I enter a small town. Spying the bus station, I pay for a ticket to a town somewhere the middle of nowhere. I didn’t really pay attention to the place, the ticket agent asked me where I wanted to go and I just pointed to a random place on the map beside him.

Taking my ticket from him, I scurry towards the bus. Finding a seat in the back, I sit down and pull my legs up into the seat. Looking out the window just as the bus started to pull away, I gasp.

Titus’ face stands out from the crowd looking at the faces passing him. I blink once and then he’s gone. Shaking my head, I lay it on the cold glass and try to push him from my mind. He might be my mate, but he wasn’t mine.
