Winter Break Plans

That weekend where most people leave to visit their family homes for winter break, finally came. Many were already out of the dorms while some were in the middle of packing. No more than ten percent of the population on campus stayed, since the vacation is one of the longest you have. Around four weeks, from the second week of December through the first week of January.

You had no plans, all except being apart of that measly ten percent the next four weeks.

You'd not gotten any information from your parents on going back home for the holidays, of course there was really no appeal in it anyway. You'd not heard from your grandpa either, since he wasn't in the country right now. So your idea was to just stay at the dorm, using the campus' amenities to edit your final project. You had started the editing process about 3 days ago, tending to it whenever you had time to spare. Though that only got you not even a fifth of the way finished.

As of right now, it was a setting Saturday afternoon and you were overlaying Jirou's composition to the movie. Hitoshi was at the library for an art history essay due after break. Trying to finish it sooner rather than later.

That was a whole other problem too, the thoughts of Hitoshi randomly popping into your head was becoming a common occurrence. Which made the idea of you always trying to drown yourself in work make for sense. That is what you would continue to do whenever you could, because you still didn't quite know how to balance how you felt...

You drifted through more layering and editing of your project. Until you were brought out of your trance by your dorm door opening. No warning from the fiddling lock like usual, he'd left it open since you were there.

"I grabbed food on my way back from the library- didn't I leave you at your desk like 4 hours ago? How is it that you haven't done anything but edit the entire time I was gone? You need to take a break." He said this while handing you a bag filled with your favorite Chinese food takeout.

"I want to get it done, plus it helps me get my mind off of the fact that I will be in the dorms for the next month." You retaliated with a small laugh that turned into a stiff sigh.

"What do you mean- wait...? You aren't actually staying here for the whole break, through christmas and the new year, right?"

"Uhh, oh yeah I guess we never talked about it huh? I mean it was the plan, yeah. I don't wanna go home and have no other family that is within an okay driving distance. So I was just going to stay here and edit, maybe wreak havoc around campus."

"That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard come out of your mouth, and you once thought roadrunners weren't real and were just made up for the cartoon."

"Hey! No one ever told me they were real until I was like 14 okay? Cut me some slack." You said while softly punching his shoulder.

"The damn bird isn't the point. The point is that this is one of our longest holidays we have, and you are not wasting it slumped in front of your computer, especially when you have more than enough time during the second semester to finish things."

"Okay, so your point is I just have to stay here and do nothing all break then. Sounds even more appealing, thanks for that inciteful assessment Hitoshi." You hoped he could hear and feel the sarcasm radiating off of your tongue.

"No, that is even sadder than your first thought. I was more leaning towards the idea of you coming to my parents house for the holidays. They wouldn't care, honestly they would probably be more than happy to house one of my only friends. And we should have more than enough space, I mean I am an only child and we live in a 3 bedroom house."

Damn he has a three bedroom house for a family of three? That's so much space...Wait, he just invited me to spend vacation with him?! Didn't he...

"Uhh...Are you sure they would be okay with that? I wouldn't be intruding on family fun time or something?"

"Yeah, I'll call my mom right now and tell her that you'll be coming with me, since you don't have anywhere else to go. The more I make it sound like you're an abandoned puppy I found, the more I guarantee that she will be fine with it."

You thought your heart was about to burst as he was on the phone, so much so that you chose to ignore the puppy insult. Your mind race with to many other things to let yourself think of a petty remark.

What the fuck happened to the original plot of the movie? How the hell did I get to the point where I am going to meet his parents and spend one of the most romantic holidays in Japan with him? I just wanted this little infatuation to die down until it found itself 6 feet under, was that too much to ask?!

"Alright, it is all good, my parents are happy to house the stray through winter." He was starting to get real bold with his teasing remarks.

"Whatever. That should be fine then, it will be fun to spend the holidays with you. They live somewhere in Okinawa City right? I think you mentioned that before."

"Yeah they do, you need to start packing like...now though. We are about an hour drive away and we are gonna leave around three tomorrow. Nice and late so you should have plenty of time and we will get there by dinner."

"Sounds perfect, I guess I will worry about the movie later then. A break with no assignments, that's insane." Of course that isn't the only insane thing going on right now, but you needed to focus the stress on something else.

Pick and choose your battles.
