I always liked the idea of Rei and Mizumi being two lovers who aren't able to get together because of social status and societal norms (aka heteronormativity). And so Rei throws away being the heir so she can live as a princess forever without the pressure to start a family when she's literally a lesbian and doesn't want children/can't have children.
So they run away and live in the woods with Rei only returning every now and then to her kingdom to attend to duties, and to wish her baby brother good luck as king since she handed it to him.
Mizumi is the daughter a war hero and she met Rei at a river, where they simply just fell in love and she returned all the time. Mizumi was her maid for a while and then they ran off to be together :).

Oh and I fucked up Mizumi's entire face but I love her outfit.
