Part 18 : A normal day

Gabby was back home with Robert and Andy. They were sitting in the living room with childhood pictures trying to familiarize gabby with their families. "I use to change your diapers all the time." Robert shares. "Way to make me feel even more embarrassed dude" gabby's sarcastic comment makes the duo laugh.
" I need to ask a couple of questions that are a bit weird but I do need to know them," gabby says reluctantly.
"Ask away" he says with a soft welcoming smile
"Did your mother breastfeed me? If yes how many times exactly?" she says with a determined look on her face.
"Yes she did, i dont know the exact number of times though" he says with a confused look on his face
"Would you say less or more than five times?" she says
"Like over 10 times. You were with is for 6 months" he says still dazzled
"Why are your asking all those really specific details," andy says curious to know what was going on in her head
"So in my religion for Robert to classify as my brother his mom as to breastfeed me 5 times and then he becomes a mahram, a mahram is a member of one's family.
Robert: so does that mine you won't leave the room if andy isn't here.
Gabby: you know what sully maybe I'll even give a hug or two
(she says giggling) flaring her hand open signalling for him to hug her and he does so.
The trio continues the night sharing stories and details about their families and childhood but gabby stayed quiet not wanting to ruin the mood by sharing her dark childhood stories.

(the next morning)
Robert and andy are getting ready for work not expecting gabby to join in and are very surprised to see her with her duffel bag downstairs fully dressed for work. "Good morning," she says flushing a smile. "Good...morning..." they reply. "I made you guys coffee" she says handing them their coffee. "Thank you but are you sure you're ready to go back to work"Andy says concerned. "What do you mean grey cleared me" gabby says playing dumb. "Andy is not talking about your physical ability to return but your mental one" Robert steps into the conversation. "I'm perfectly fine to return back to work. I basically got half a shift before my life went to shit and I thought I would never work as a firefighter ever again and I felt my heart literally break inside my chest....so yes i'm ready to go back to work because I have that privilege to do so and I have a lot of amends to make especially after running off during a fire " gabby says opening up her pride to do the job apparent and her shame of letting them down obvious.It was good enough for Robert and andy.
Since she hadnt really addressed any of the things that happened.

At the station
Gabby was patiently waiting for Maya outside her office. Too ashamed to knock on the door. "What will I even say," she thought. Does she explain her whole life story or just apologize and accept whatever punishment lies ahead. I guess Maya notices how long she had been standing there and calls her in.
"Probie comes in" Maya stays sternly.
"Yes, captain" gabby comes in a nervous wreck. Maya just observes her patiently but every time gabby was about to open her mouth she hesitates never once actually speaking.
"Out with it probie" Maya speaks again in a fed-up tone
"I'm sorry...I'm ashamed of the actions I took last shift... There is no excuse for what I did. It was careless and cowardly...I'm..s...sorry" gabby speaks her words or heartfelt the whole time she looked at the floor hands tucked behind her.
"I wanted to fire you for what you did," Maya says getting up from her chair and approaches her.
"I understand...thank you for all the great opportunities and encouragement," gabby says tears escaping her eyes and turning to leave.
"Probie I'm not firing you...your sister was a pretty good advocate in your defence and even though you run away from my fire scene you locked up a whole sex trafficking ring...would be a pretty big loss if let you go" Maya says smiling at gabby. Gabby felt pretty relieved to hear that so she went and hugged maya tightly "THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU" she lets out
"Ok..ok but you're still on bathroom duty for a whole month" maya Interpets
"Yes! Captain" gabby says letting go of Maya and trying to act professionally.
In the beanery everyone was gossiping about gabby's situation
"So like she went to prison!...like actual prison?" miller says whispering
"Yes I did!" shabby response entering the beanery to grab breakfast.
"Am I allowed to ask if it was like orange is the new black" vice says
"Seriously dude it kinda was but without all the sex" gabby responds while cooking her eggs.
"Your life is so overwhelming" Travis says
"Tell me about it" gabby says mumbling
AID CAR 19 pregnant woman in distress.
"Thats us" Robert says to gabby.
And they walk out there
They arrive on the scene and have no option but to deliver.
"Time to show me you paramedic school skills" says Robert teasingly
"I've never delivered a baby outside of training before" says gabby anxiously
"Whats step 1 probie" Robert asks
"Check dilation she is very much dilated," gabby says sarcastically
"Then all we gotta do is wait for nature to take its course"
He says
They ask the women to push and soon or later the baby was in their hand and gabby then cuts the umbilical cord and then instructs her to push the placenta too.
"Congrats you got a beautiful baby girl" Robert says handing her the baby. The woman starts crying happy tears looking at her baby and smiling. They transfer her to the hospital.

Gabby and Robert are submitting their incident Report as soon as gabby sees Conrad she makes up some excuse about going to grab supplies for the rig
"Why is she avoiding me," Conrad asks Robert
"What do you mean?" Robert asks him
"She has been avoiding my calls and texts all day and now she is running off," he says annoyed
"Maybe she is busy or needs some space," Robert says
He finishes the Robert and goes to the rig to find gabby hiding out
"Gabby why are you hiding out from Conrad," he asks crossing his arms and raising his eyebrow
" I have feelings for him...ok. And I don't know how to deal with them so I'm avoiding him" she says in one breath
"That's a horrible way to deal with that situation," he says sarcastically
"I know but like dating is haram (forbidden in Islam) and I don't think I can't control myself around him and also with everything that happened he starting to treat me like a delicate flower and I hate that so much" she complains even more.
" One avoiding him won't make those feelings go away. Two he genuinely cares about you and I would even say he loves you. Just talk to him" he says putting a hand on her shoulder squeezing it.
"You really think he feels the same way" gabby asks with curious eyes
"That man is crazy about you" he says shaking her shoulder lightly
"We need gas btw" she says changing the topic
"Yeah let's go then," he says

They drive to the SFD gas station where they are greeted by a not so friendly group of firefighters
"Hey look it's our favourite drug addict ex battalion chief," says one of the grumpy firefighters
"What!" Gabby exclaims
"Sweetheart your partner is drug thief who stole fentanyl from a rig" says a lieutenant bitter
Gabby is left dazzled
And Robert ashamed of his past self
