"Are those protestors?" Gwen asked.

She'd just pulled the car up to Lucian's house. Fallon glanced across the street and saw a group of people wearing white robes and holding signs that said stuff like 'devils go home' and 'demons not welcome here' and 'sinners repent'. Though she didn't see anyone she recognized, she didn't doubt the God Squad was in the thick of it.

"I guess," Fallon said and shrugged off her mother's concern. "They're probably just one of those super religious groups who don't like Halloween."

There was no need for them to use the call box tonight. The gate that led to the house was wide open. Already, the long road behind it was littered with cars. Her mother squeezed their car into the first spot she found. Even though it was almost eight, it was still light enough they could see the path to the door. As they walked toward the house, Fallon could hear the music coming from inside. Though she offered her mom a smile, doubt made her heart beat out of control. That costume she'd begged her mom to buy her last weekend suddenly seemed a little silly. It had been harder to convince her mom to buy her the costume than it had been to get her to let her go to a party that went from eight until midnight. The fact that the party would be going on so late was the very same argument her mom made against the costume. Apparently, it would be too late for her to be wearing something so sexy. Someone would get the wrong idea. Fallon knew what her mom was really saying. Lucian might think she was trying to say she wanted him or something. Fallon played the good grades and good girl card and her mom gave in and gave her what she wanted. Not only did she agree to buy the costume, but she said Fallon could stay for the whole party. Getting her to give on that one took Daphne's help. Since her mom would be starting her shift at the same time the party ended, Fallon convinced her that she could catch a ride home with Daphne. From there, it turned in to her spending the night with Daphne. Fallon wanted to sink through the floor when her mom insisted on calling Daphne's mom to make sure it was okay, but Daphne's mom played her part perfectly. Now, Fallon stood on the threshold of the first real party she'd ever been invited to wishing she'd listened to her mom about the costume.

They rang the doorbell, and when the door opened the music blasted in their faces. A craggy faced doorman smiled at them.

"Welcome to the Locke house," he said. "Come in, and I'll take your coats."

"I'm not staying, but I'd like to speak to Simeon Locke please," Gwen said.

"Mom," Fallon groaned. "What are you doing?"

"Certainly, ma'am," the doorman said. "I will return momentarily with Mr. Locke."

"Please don't embarrass me, Mom," Fallon pleaded.

"Gwen!" Simeon boomed. "Pleasure to see you again."

As he approached, Fallon noticed he was dressed like a pirate. He even wore an eye patch over one eye. Recalling her first impression of him, she wondered if he'd taken the idea from her mind. The thought set her face on fire. Behind him, she spotted Lucian and Griffin. She almost laughed out loud to see their identical grim reaper costumes.

"Will you be joining the party after all?" Simeon asked her mom.

"No, I just wanted to make sure this is going to be a safe event for my daughter," Gwen said, and Fallon blushed even deeper while the twins grinned at her.

"I assure you that your daughter will be fine," Simeon said. "I won't let anything happen to her. I will personally assume full responsibility for her safety."
