“Did you hear the horrible news?” Lucian asked.

Fallon hadn’t heard any horrible news, and she wondered why he was grinning at her when he asked.

“What news?”

“Some unknown vandals broke into Christian’s uncle’s church and made a mess of things. Song books were ripped in half, the upholstery on the church pews was sprayed with something quite foul, and some low life even turned the cross where JC was hanging upside down. It’s really sad.”

Fallon laughed. “What kind of low life would do a thing like that?”

“Probably the same kind of low life who’s sick and tired of Christian messing in his business.”

“How’d you manage to do all that anyway? Didn’t it take forever?”

“It took a while which is why Griff and I spent yesterday in Hell. We needed to recharge.”

“Griffin helped you?”

“Of course. He’s as pissed at them as I am. Plus it’s fun to fuck with the faithful.”

“Joelle called me yesterday. She thinks he’s mad at her because he was so quiet after dinner or something like that.”

“He’s not. He was mad at me and Simeon, but he’s over it now.”

“That’s good. Then maybe he can go back to acting normal around Joelle so I don’t have to deal with her whining,” Fallon said, and Lucian laughed. “Oh, and speaking of things I don’t want to deal with, my mom wants me to get on the pill.”

“Excuse me?”

“Yeah, she thinks we’re having sex daily and condoms aren’t enough protection. She even told me to have you wear a condom when I blow you.”

“Are you kidding?”

“Believe me, I wish I was. Anyway, she made me an appointment for this Friday afternoon so you don’t have to drive me home from school.”

“That’s good, I guess.”

“Do we even need protection? Can you get me pregnant?”

“Yes, the human part of me can. How do you think my dad made me?”

“I didn’t think of that.”

They were silent for a minute, and Fallon thought of his mother dying in childbirth. It wasn’t just his mother. Lucian once told her all the women who gave birth to Satan’s children were doomed to die in childbirth. Did that mean the same thing could happen to her if she and Lucian ever tried to have a baby?

“Yes,” Lucian said softly.

“So, we can’t ever have kids?”

“Not unless you’re willing to die.”

Fallon shuddered at the thought. There was a lot she was willing to do and a lot she accepted about Lucian, but she wasn’t crazy about dying just to have a baby with him. Besides, she didn’t like kids that much anyway. Getting on the pill suddenly sounded like a very good idea.

Lucian parked the car in front of the school, and Fallon waited while he came around to open her door. He did, but she didn’t get out right away.

“Fallon, it’s okay,” he said as he reached for her hand. “I don’t expect you to sacrifice your life to give me a child.”

Fallon turned to face him. “Never?”

            “Never.”
