"Thank you, and thank you for the early morning surprise, it really was...something..."
He clicked his teeth, holding his arms out for a hug, "Eh, it's no big deal. Just payback for giving me food poisoning on my birthday. Anyways, Lloyd told me about the cabin idea. As much as I don't want to, I'm gonna have to pass on that."
I pull away from the hug, "What? Why?!"
"I have work! Being a uni student isn't easy, plus this class is killing me! Also I may have left an essay till the last minute..."
"Kai, we talked about this!"
"I know, I know, I have a procrastination problem, I think that's been established already. So tell me, how was your birthday?"
"It was..it was pretty good, yeah."
"You're blushing."
"Am not!" But my cheeks were burning, and Kai simply grinned even more, "Why? Did Lloyd do a big public romantic gesture or something?"
"No, no, nothing of the sort. Jay actually gave me some homemade pastries and a rose-"
"You've been hanging around Jay an awful lot," Kai states, slipping on his glasses. I scoff, punching his arm, "Am not!"
"You think I'm a fool? You seriously didn't think I didn't see you guys meet up for that Mechanics' Fair? Now, it may be a surprise to you, but under this hunky hotness, I am very observant."
I roll my eyes at the latter statement. As for the former...
Tucking my hair behind my ears, I look away awkwardly, "I know how this seems, but-"
My brother shrugged, "Seems like you have something for Jay there."
My head jerks back to look at him in disbelief, "W-What? No! Nope! Nuh-uh! I would never do that to Lloyd! Oh, God, please don't kill me..."
"I'm not that mean, relax would you? It's obvious you have some strong feelings for Jay."
"I do not!"
"I saw you looking through his Instagram yesterday!"
I froze. Busted.
Kai rolled his eyes. "Look, if you want to date Jay, then just date him. I may be Lloyd's best friend, but you come first, sis. Always." He hugs me again, "Just remember, the heart wants what it wants. Don't suppress your feelings, 'kay? And...if you don't mind me chipping in...kinda seems like Jay has a small something for you too."
"What?"
"I said-"
"No, I heard you. I just...wasn't expecting you of all people to support me..." Pulling away from the hug, Kai grips my shoulders.
"I'll support you, always. I'm always in your corner, remember that."
"Since when did you get so wise?"
He beamed at me eagerly, "I feel like a mentor! So...wise, and all-knowing, ya know? Does it look cool, because it feels really cool!"
"Um...sure?"
I squeak as I get sweeped up in an extremely tight hug. I think my ribcage has now been entirely rearranged, thanks to my brother dearest.
