At the dinner table, you and Vicrul were practically vibrating with excitement, giggling over your animal-shaped chicken nuggets and glasses of chocolate milk. Genevieve, drying a sheet pan with a tea towel, smiled, watching her soon-to-be six year old children, her smile only growing when you and your brother decided who could roar more like a dinosaur.

Shortly after dinner, bathed and dressed for bed, both you and Vicrul resting your heads on your mother's shoulders as she continued with the bedtime story about a magic beanstalk and a giant, your eyes growing heavier and heavier with each passing moment. Out of the corner of your eye, you could see that Vicrul was already asleep, his thumb hanging halfway out of his mouth.

Genevieve slowly lifted you and your brother off of the couch, holding you both tightly in her arms as she ventured down the hallway, setting you down at the foot of Vicrul's bed as she gently tucked him in, brushing some of his hair out of his face as he nuzzled deeper into the pillow, pressing a brief kiss to his temple.

"Come here, my love..." your mother whispered, gathering you into her arms, holding you close as she slowly carried you out of your brother's room, setting off to your room across the hallway.

Genevieve slowly opened your bedroom door, revealing your neat and tidy pastel pink bedroom. Pressing her lips to your temple, she twirled you around slowly, earning a faint, sleepy giggle from you. She laid you down in bed, handing you the small grey rabbit stuffed animal that you cuddled with nightly, for as long as you could remember. With a smile on her face, your mother draped you in your pink blankets, rubbing the tip of her nose against yours as she tucked you in.

"Sweet dreams, my angel...I love you." she whispered, pushing some of your curls out of your face, eyelids already drooping.

"I love you too, Mama." you mumbled, rubbing your eyes with your tiny fists. Genevieve smiled, pressing a kiss to your temple, slowly standing, ready to leave you for the night.

"Mama?" you asked, sitting up, holding your rabbit close, almost as if the small stuffed animal could protect you from anything and everything.

"Yes, my love?"

"You're always gonna be my Mama, right? You're always gonna be here..." you mumbled, your bottom lip poking out slightly, tears clouding your vision. A hiccup rocked your tiny chest, as you rubbed the tears from your eyes furiously.

"Oh, my sweet baby girl, of course...I'll always be your Mama and I'll always be by your side...And I will love you with every ounce of everything in me, my love." Genevieve said, sitting back down on the side of your bed, playing with your hair, watching as you began to relax.

After a few minutes, dipping in and out of restful sleep, you felt your mother gently move you over to the side, covering the both of you up with your tiny blanket, wrapping her arms around you.

"Happy birthday," your mother whispered into your hair, your name rolling off her lips easily, "I love you so much."

...

The memory of the last birthday you had spent with your still healthy mother seemed to rouse you, your heart squeezing uncomfortably within your ribcage.

Your head felt like it was going to explode, the pounding absolutely nauseating. Even if you moved a fraction of an inch, you felt as if you were going to vomit everywhere. Before you could work up the nerve to open your eyes, a whimper escaped your lips as the laceration on your temple pressed into a rough surface, shooting pain throughout your skull.
