Chapter Eighteen

Sreetoma and Anirudh rushed to Melar math to save Bondita. When they reached, they saw a burning chita and unconscious Bondita whom was in bridal attire without sindoor held by few womens. The panchayat pradhan was announcing Bondita's sati to the villagers. Guruji sat in his Golden armchair watching everything quietly. Kaka didn’t came to witness the sati.

Panchayat Pradhan : Asa karunga iss karya ke bad kisi Tulsipur wasiyoki himmat nahi hogi Bhagwan aur Guruji ke bare main galat bolneki! Aur agar kisiki bhi himmat huyi! Sadba ho yah Bidhwa! Mard ho yah Aurat! Usko bhi jalaya jayega! Ayi baat samajh main?

Guruji grinned while Anirudh became still. Is he in his Motherland or in hell?

Sreetoma : Anirudh babu! Ap aise khare kyu hain? Jaldi chaliye!!

Anirudh : H...Haan!

Anirudh then went in the melar math.
The women were about to throw Bondita in chita.

Anirudh : Rukiye!!

Everyone then stared at Anirudh.

Panchayat Pradhan : Anirudh babu....

Anirudh : Kis adhikar se aplog uski sati kar rahe hain!! Himmat kaise huyi usko chuneki!!

Anirudh : Thik hain! Main bhi dekhta hoon ap log uski Sati kaise karte hain!

Saying that, Anirudh tries to go near Bondita but he gets stopped by few people.

Panchayat Pradhan : Dekhiye Anirudh babu, Ap zamindar hain...Issliye humlog abhi bhi apse acche se pesh arahe hain. Ap kripa karke humko hamara karya karne de aur mujhe apne admiyose apko bandhne main majboor maat kijiye.

Anirudh : Joh kar sakte hain kijiye.

Saying that, Anirudh comes forward. Panchayat pradhan signals his mens. One men tries to hit Anirudh with stick but Anirudh backs off and then hits the guy up and takes his sticks. Then he keeps fighting with the other mens and signals Sreetoma to save Bondita. Sreetoma then tries to run torwards Bondita but gets stopped by people. Sreetoma then takes out her dagger and scares them. Then she takes Bondita in her arms. But when she tries to run away with Bondita, people circle around her and she accidently drops her dagger. People get closer torwards her and Bondita. Suddenly, a smoke bomb blasts in the melar math and everywhere gets filled with smoke. Everyone started coughing. Sreetoma cover her mouth and takes her dagger and runs with Bondita. Anirudh was coughing too.

Sreetoma : Anirudh babu! Jaldi se apna rumal muh main bandh lijiye aur chaliye.

Anirudh then runs away with Sreetoma and Bondita. Yusuf was their.

Yusuf : Aplog jaldi bhagiye yahase! Aur yeh pistol rakhiye. Didi! Inko hamare ghati main le jana! Waha yehlog nahi pohuch payenge! Mera yaha aur rehna sahi nahi hoga! Main jata hoon!

Sreetoma : Thik hain Dada.

Then Yusuf hands Anirudh a pistol. Then they run away. Soon the affect of the smoke bomb decreses and people started running after them. Sreetoma couldnt run faster anymore cause she was picking Bondita up for too long. So Anirudh takes Bondita. But soon people catch them up. When one came too close, Sreetoma wounded their hand with her dagger so everyone got scared.Anirudh also shot the gun few times in air to scare them off and run.
Suddenly, someone hit Sreetoma's head with a piece of stone and she passes out.

Anirudh : Sreetoma ji!

He tried to go close to Sreetoma but the mens were getting close. The mens tried to snatch Bondita from him. So he kicked a men and the men fell down. Then he took the mens firetourch and created a fire circle. Him, Bondita and Sreetoma were inside the circle.

Anirudh : Koyi pas nahi ayega!

A Men : Anirudh babu! Yeh pagalpanti bandh kijiye aur uss bachiko hamare hawale kijiye!

Anirudh : Main pagalpanti kar raha hun? Aur aplog ek choti bacchi ko jinda jalaneki kosis kar rahe hain! Woh kuch nahi!

A Men : Ek zamindar ki rokhita (Misstress) banke jinese uske liye yehi behtar hoga!

Anirudh : Kya bola apne?

Men 2 : Sahi toh bol rahe hain woh! Kya kar rahe hain ap iss bacchi ko itnedin se bina naam aur ristey ke apne ghar main rakhke!

Anirudh became speechless after hearing those words.

Men 3 : Wasebhi kon karega iss apsagun se vivah?

Anirudh : Main karunga isse Vivah!

Anirudh was shocked by his own words.

Men 2 : Aap karenge ek neech ghar ki ladki seh vivah? Apki toh mangetar hain na? Apne mangetar ke sath vivah ke bad toh wasebhi kure ki tarha fek denge usse! Uske bad kaha jayegi woh?

Men 1 : Haan! Issliye Sati Karna hi sabse sammanjanak hoga iss bidhwa ke liye!!

Then few men came with water to stop the fire. Anirudh gets scared. Then they burn out the firecircle.

Anirudh : Hamare pass maat ana! Goli chala dunga main!!

Then Anirudh tries to fire but the gun was already empty. The mens get closer torwards them. Ani then thinks what to do. Suddenly he saw an gachkouto opened in the ground. Anirudh then doesn't think of anything and takes the sindoor and puts it on unconsious Bondita's forhead.

Thus, a new relation was made. It was not a relation made from love. But a relation made from the presure of the cruel society. Relation made to save a child from cruel practice of Sati..... Bondita was no longer Widow Bondita das....She is now Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury.......
