It's all coming back to me now (2/4)

It was two weeks later. Meredith was laying on the couch with Derek, Amelia and Mark. Her mother had come over yesterday and it was slightly awkward but Carolyn helped both of them to get the comfort they needed

"Mer, do you wanna watch another episode?" Derek asked her but she didn't reply

"She's asleep again?" Mark frowned

"Yeah" Derek sighed and covered her body with the warm blanket

"Let's watch something she doesn't enjoy" Amelia grabbed the controller

"I hope she will be able to enjoy tonight" Derek sighed. It would be her last night at home because he had to go back to the hospital by tomorrow and all of them knew she could be placed into isolation at any moment

"Anyone hungry?" Carolyn asked as she walked into the room

"Mer hasn't eaten" Derek sighed "She at least needs to try, that feeding tube isn't enough" He said concerned

I'll go get some apple sauce, usually she likes it" Carolyn softly smiled and adjusted the scarf that was wrapped around her head to keep the girl warm at all times

Derek brushed his finger over Meredith's cheek as she was asleep in his arms, her head on his chest

"Meredith, dear. Can you wake up for me?" Carolyn gently shook her awake

"Hmm" Meredith groaned in Derek's arms

"Mer, you should try to eat something" Derek kissed her forehead

"Not hungry" She mumbled

"Please try" Carolyn carefully pushed

"-Kay" She gave in as she tried to push herself up but needed some help from Derek

She ate a few spoons of apple sauce before she started to get sick again. Luckily for her she didn't throw up

...

"What would you think of going on a trip once you're better?" Derek suggested

"A trip?" She looked up confused

"Maybe we can go to Los Angeles for a few days or so" Derek suggested

"I would like that" Meredith breathed in Derek's arms

"I thought you would" Derek smiled "Are you doing okay?" He frowned as he noticed her eyes were drooping again

"Just so tired" Meredith sighed "And my mouth stings"

"Sleep" He kissed her forehead as she fell asleep. Derek was waiting for his mom to walk in so hebcould tell her about the feeling Meredith had in her mouth

As Carolyn walked in, Derek looked at her with concerned eyes which made her frown "What's wrong?"

"Her mouth stings" Derek said while his voice was shaking

"Oh-" Carolyn breathed

"Mom, her immune system-" Derek panicked

"Derek, we knew this was about to happen.." Carolyn softly explained even if she was angry at the universe for letting this happen to such an amazing young girl

"Mom, she can't go into isolation.. She only has us!" Derek raised his voice but it was more like a harsh whisper as he was scared to wake up Meredith

"And me and dad will make sure she won't be alone, believe us" Carolyn promised

"I'm so scared" Derek quietly admitted

"We're all scared but that's nothing compared to Meredith" Carolyn rubbed his back as tears streamed down his face

...

"Rinse your mouth with this, honey" Carolyn helped Meredith

Meredith did so and winced in pain. The mouth sores had taken over and the water with salt in it was burning in her mouth

"Okay, spit it out" Carolyn instructed

Meredith did so. Her hand grabbed her mouth and started slightly pushing the skin as the pain got too much. She started crying in pain

"Shh, it's okay. It's okay" Derek kissed her head

Meredith shook her head as she was curled up in his lap

"It will all be okay" Derek cuddled her close in his arms while still being careful

Meredith's mouth hurt so bad she couldn't even talk. Carolyn had tried some tricks she knew so the wounds wouldn't get infected and started healing quicker even if they both knew this was the chemo's doing as it broke down her immune system

"Do you wanna go to bed?" Derek asked her and she shook her head

"Dear, I think it will be best if you sleep a bit" Carolyn's hand brushed over the scarf that was wrapped around Meredith's bald head

Meredith shrugged in response so Derek picked her up and carried her upstairs to his parents' room where he and Meredith slept for now

The room was warm, had a neutral smell because anything special could make Meredith throw up

He placed her down on the thick mattress and placed the heating pad underneath her back. He knew she was freezing cold these days so he tucked her in with tons of blankets and changed the scarf to a beanie

"I love you so much," Derek kissed her forehead. He saw the tears appearing in her eyes when they both realised there was no way she could say it back because of the mouth sores

Meredith grabbed his hand weakly and squeezed it as a way to say it back

Derek laid down next to his Meredith and held her tight in his arms. He started to imagine a future with her.

He could see a few kids running in the backyard, them both being doctors in the best hospital of Seattle, close to their family and friends. Them being a team forever, 110

He could only smile by these thoughts but got pulled out of them quickly enough when she started shivering in his arms. She needed to survive this, they need to make their dreams come true
