For a long time,

There was a person in my mirror.

They were of medium size,

A bit overweight,

With short unruly hair,

And a pair of glasses.

They wore a sweatshirt,

And comfortable pants.

They were confident,

And had a large smile on their face.

In my dreams,

They had a sword,

And fought the monsters.

They had a pet wolf,

And they were always there for me.

They stood by me,

And were there to take care of me.

They were my protector,

And nothing could harm me

When they were by my side.

They held my hand,

While I cried, sobbed and screamed.

They cleaned the blood,

That I couldn't care about.

They whispered compliments,

When the nightmares took over.

They were my everything,

They gave me a reason to live.

They were my knight,

My savior.

But I realized

A little something,

Not too long ago.

All this time.

All this time,

It was me.

That person,

That older, sweeter,

Better person,

Was me.

I don't know,

If it was always me,

Or if I forged myself

To be them,

But it's the truth.

When the angel,

Gave me the portrait,

I realized that it was them.

It was the hero that I drew

So many time in the past.

But I also realized

That the more I grew,

The less I saw them.

When I got my scarf,

When I came out,

When I fell in love,

When I put on my glasses,

When I cut my hair,

When people use 'He' or 'They',

When they call me by my name.

This knight,

Here to save me,

From the world and myself.

They are now,

Just my consciousness,

The kind, caring part,

That is always there for others.

They are still there,

I only need,

To look in a mirror.
