La Douleur Exquise (Noun) - The pain of loving someone you know you'll never have.

"Mate are you sure that's what she said?" Anwir asks from the common room couch.

"Yes, Anwir I remember it exactly. I watched the whole thing; how could I be so stupid? It was obvious from day one."

Two hours ago

Alexander decided to skip his 4th period today. He had herbology, which he believed to be optional.

It was so pointless to him, why would he, the prince and heir of Bellin need to know how to keep a plant alive? That was the groundskeeper's job, not his.

He was wandering the halls looking for something to do when he overheard two voices coming from the infirmary.

"I thought Mrs Febris was out sick today?" He said to himself.

Peeking through the door, Alexander spots Lex Moreau sitting down in one of the beds and the back of a girl's head.

He dismissed it thinking it was one of his weekly hookups. He wondered who the unlucky girl was this week.

Alexander was about to leave when he heard the girl laugh.

He turned back around and peeked through the door again to make sure he wasn't hearing things. Unfortunately, he wasn't.

He watched as Lex stood up and wrapped his arms around her. Unexpectedly, she does the same.

Alexander would have never thought Azura was one for hugs. She always seemed to keep to herself and hated affection.

He opened the door a little wider to hear what they were talking about.

"-Im so lucky to have you," Alexander heard him say.

"Anything for my Lex"

Present time

Alexander paced around the common room while Anwir sat on the couch eating some sort of snack he bought from the village.

"Why would she call him 'Her Lex'?" Alexander went on.

"Look man," Anwir sighs standing up from the coach, "I don't know if they're dating, hooking up, or just really good mates. But is she really that special to have you stressed out this much? I'm pretty sure your hair is getting greyer"

He was right, for once. Alexander didn't know why seeing Azura and another guy made him so mad. When he saw her for the first time, in the dining hall, to saturday when they were eating pastries and laughing together, he just couldn't imagine her being so close to another guy.

He thought she was finally warming up to him, and perhaps they would be something more.

As much as he hated the fact he walked into them, he was glad he did. It was a wake-up call.

Alexander could never be anything more than her mentor. She was a Starling, he was a Gray.

"I hate this kingdom" Alexander huffs walking out of the common room.

Alexander grew up surrounded by only the best.

He was shown how to walk, talk, and act.

He could be nothing but the best, and he was.

In the eyes of his subjects, he was the perfect prince. He was attractive, tall, smart and responsible. The perfect prince.

But on top of the highest peak of Bellin, behind the closed gates of Gray castle, was just a boy.

He didn't really have anyone to turn to for help. He was raised by servants, rarely seeing his mother, his father terrified him and his sister was too young. Sure he had Anwir and Diana, but he never had that connection he saw with so many of his peers.

One of those peers is Ryker Starling. Alexander believed Ryker had a perfect life. He didn't have the same obligations and rules to follow as Alexander did. He didn't have to worry about messing up in public, or being on top of all his classes. He did whatever and whoever he wanted, he went to parties, skipped all his classes, explored the academy, not a care in the world. He surrounded himself with people who cared for him and his troubles. He had the perfect life to Alexander.

That's why he was hurt when he found Azura and Lex. He thought that if he befriended Ryker's sister, his life would suddenly fill with excitement. And it did, for a brief moment.

Alexander loved spending time with her, whether it was messing around with cakes or reading by the fire. It added colour to his black and white world.

To Anwir it seemed ridiculous, him reacting so dramatically to a girl he'd only known for a week. For Alexander's whole life, his only friends or acquaintances were arranged. They were all the same, scripted small talk, tasteless finger foods and forced laughter.

But with Azura, he felt free, able to be himself without worrying about how he spoke or acted.

Since his first year, Alexander would come to the same spot to clear his mind. An old honey oak tree in the Everett forest. It was his secret place, where no one could find him.

Alexander sat down under the tree and looked out to the small waterfall. He watched as the water bounced around as it hit the water, and laughed as the frogs would fall when they missed the lilypad.

He heard the branches crack under someone's shoe behind him.

"You found me" He smiled to himself

"Hardly, what is this place?"

"A secret place"

Alexander wriggled over as they took a seat next to him at the base of the tree.

"Why did you ask me to meet you here Alex?"
