Chapter 7: Phase One in Motion

The Royal Flush was a five-star hotel and resort that catered to the one percent of the world.

Leviathan, heir to the Orochi zaibatsu* group, has passed through the lobby so many times in his life that the diamond-encrusted chandeliers were no different from a 25-cent candle bought from a street vendor. (Then again, no modern gemstone could compare to the hundred-year-old jade collection Levi's mother treasured so much.)

He really hated this hotel. Being here meant that he was attending a formal event with his father. It was the birthday of an old family friend, quite literally, the man in question was now seventy-three years old.

Not to be disrespectful, but Levi couldn't bring himself to pay attention to the speaker on stage who was reciting some speech for the birthday man.

Levi's suit pinched him a little too harshly when he put it on for tonight and his mother confiscated all of his consoles (and his phone), warning him to be on his best behavior. Levi wanted to be polite and proper, but he really, really, really couldn't bring himself to care about a senior whose name he hadn't known up until a week ago. Not to mention that his twin cousins, a boy and a girl, crashed over the other day and "accidentally" broke his favorite Bakunawa figurine! The little brats ...

When he tried to scold them they cried over to their mother and she glared at him like he was a monster. Then she went to tell his mother, who in turn told him off and then--

To make a long story short, it's been a bad week, but right now, all he can focus on was the buffet table. Creamy mushroom soup, different salads, smoked salmon, and a variety of French pastries.

He wasn't hungry, but when he felt uneasy he wanted to do one of two things: fanboy or eat.

"... And thank you all for coming here. Please enjoy tonight's dinner," Levi heard the young orator, followed by clapping. Next thing he knew he was over at the buffet table piling his plate with lettuce and pieces of salmon.

He didn't see his dad so he spent the rest of the evening sampling the desserts. He started with the lemon-colored pudding, then he went after the pillowy soft cream puffs, and then he grabbed a strawberry mille feuille that melted like velvet on the tongue.

He graciously accepted the cup of cafe noisette from the server. The bitterness was enough to balance out the sweetness from earlier. "Mmm ... " Levi moaned out.

"Is this what they call fate?" Interrupted a teasing voice.

"Mm--arrumph!" Levi almost choked but he quickly gulped down the coffee and crumbs with a few punches to his chest.

As he coughed, he noticed a pair of polished black shoes.

Hesitantly, he looked up and instantly regretted his decision to not fake diarrhea this morning.

A familiar young man stood before him, one hand tucked in the pocket of his sleek blue slacks. Your hair was slicked back, a single cowlick stopped you from looking too old.

"W-why are you--"

"Wow, you didn't even listen to the guest of honor's grandson. You must really love French cuisine. I'm a little jealous," you said.

Levi kept quiet in return.

"My maternal grandfather may be a little up there in age, but he's still quite a charmer, y'know. So is grandmother."

Levi almost nodded. He was too stressed to take note about it before, but the man who turned 73 today still had a full head of silvery hair, his eyes were bright as he socialized with the guests. Standing next to that man was a woman with a stylish white bob, her hourglass figure evident in her black long sleeved dress.
