Princess Adelaide of Cambridge (Elizabeth Adelaide Mary Louise; born 21 November 2006) is a member of the British royal family. She is the eldest child of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and is third in the line of succession to the British throne, behind her grandfather Prince Charles and her father. Due to her rank in the line of succession, and the subsequent expectation that she will one day become the British monarch, her birth was widely celebrated across the Commonwealth realms. In 2021, Adelaide initiated the Earth Shot Prize with her father. Since 2017, Adelaide has been working with other Royal teenagers from around the world on the Learning Quest project, which centers around global early childhood education.

Birth

Princess Adelaide was born in the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital, London, at 23:58 BST (00:28 UTC) on 21 November 2006.[2] The birth was announced by press release and was followed by the display of a traditional easel in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace.[2][3] The newborn was widely hailed as a future queen in the majority of British newspapers.[4][5] 21-gun salute signaled the birth in the capitals of Bermuda[6] and New Zealand;[7] the bells of Westminster Abbey and many other churches were rung;[8][9] and landmarks in the Commonwealth realms were illuminated in various colors, mostly pink to signify the birth of a girl. [10] On 23 November, her name was announced as Adelaide Elizabeth Leonora Mary.[11] Princess Adelaide's official title and style are "Her Royal Highness Princess Adelaide of Cambridge",[12][13] which she has carried since birth, in accordance with Letters Patent dated 1898,[14] 1917,[15] and most recently 31 December 2005.[16]
Adelaide's father, the Duke of Cambridge, is the elder son of the Prince of Wales, who is the heir apparent to Queen Elizabeth 11,[17] placing Adelaide third in the line of succession to the British throne.[18] Speculation ensued during the pregnancy of the Duchess of Cambridge that Adelaide's birth would boost the British national economy and provide a focus for national pride.[18]Commemorative coins were issued by the Royal Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint,[19][20] The first time a royal birth had been marked that way.[19] Princess Adelaide's birth marked the second time that three generations in direct line of succession to the throne have been alive at the same time, a situation that last occurred between 1894 and 1901, in the last seven years of the reign of Queen Victoria.[21]

Adelaide was christened by Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, in the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace on 25 December 2006, with Oliver Baker, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, Earl Grosvenor, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Julia Samuel, William van Cutsem and Zara Tindall serving as godparents.[22][23] The font used at the ceremony was made for Queen Victoria's first child and the water was taken from the River Jordan.[24][25] Princess Adelaide spent her first years at her parent's cottage on the grounds of Bodorgan Hall in Anglesey, Wales, before her family relocated to Kensington Palace in 2014.[26] [27] Her younger siblings, George, Charlotte, and Louis were born in 2013, 2015, and 2018, respectively.[28]

Education

Adelaide's formal education began in January 2008, when, at the age of two, she began attending the Westacre Montessori School Nursery, near his family home at Anmer Hall in Norfolk. [29] She attended his first day of primary school on 7 September 2010 at the Thomas's School in Battersea.[30][31] In September 2017, Adelaide skipped 3 grades and enrolled in year 10 at Cheltenham Ladies College. [32] In August 2021, Adelaide left with 9 O-levels (GCSES) and 5 A-levels in Life and Health Sciences, Computer Science, Economics, Psychology, and Law, achieving A in all of the subjects. [33][34] She is currently studying a triple major in Neuroscience, Computer Science, and Economics and a minor in Cognitive Science at Trinity College in Cambridge University. [35][36] She attends her schooling under the name of Adelaide Cambridge. [37]

Official appearances

Adelaide embarked on her first royal tour with her parents in January 2010, during which the Cambridges spent one week in New Zealand and Australia. Although she only appeared twice, the BBC described the "3-years-old future queen" as "the star of the show".[38] Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott predicted in Parliament House, Canberra, that Adelaide would one day be welcomed there as Queen of Australia.[39] Adelaide also accompanied her parents on their trip to Canada in July of 2011.[40] In June 2008 she made her first public appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace following the Trooping the Colour parade marking the Queen's Official Birthday.[41] On 22 April 2016, Adelaide met U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama. Adelaide and her younger siblings, George and Charlotte, accompanied their parents on a tour of Canada in September 2016,[42] [43] and on a diplomatic visit to Poland and Germany in July 2017.[44] In the summer of 2017, Adelaide launched her first independent initiative, Learning Quest, joining many royal teenagers, including Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, Prince Christian of Demark, Prince Nikolai of Demark, Alejandro, Prince of Austria, and Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway, to bring awareness to charities promoting early childhood education. [45][46] In September 2018, Adelaide delivered her first speech to open the first Learning Quest schooling facility in Birmingham, and in July of the subsequent year, two other facilities in Wales and Glasgow. [47][48] In 2021, she attended the virtual opening of a Learning Quest school in West Sussex. [49]In March 2020, Princess Adelaide joined her siblings, George, Charlotte, and Louis, in an online video to applaud key workers during the coronavirus pandemic.[50] In September 2020, the children met David Attenborough; Kensington Palace subsequently released a video of them asking Attenborough questions regarding environmental conservation.[51][52] In December 2020, they made a red carpet appearance accompanying their parents to the London Palladium for a performance of a pantomime held to thank key workers for their efforts during the pandemic.[53]
