WHEN SPENCER RETURNED HOME THAT EVENING , the first sight she was graciously greeted with was her mother sprawled our on the staircase. Her left arm turned in a way that it naturally shouldn't, and the other laid just above her face. "Fuck Sakes."
"Why's her arm bent like that?" asked Anais in an inquisitive tone, stepping forward from her position behind her elder sister. "did she break it?"
Spencer tried to aimlessly scramble her brain for an efficient response. She'd always had to do it from the moment Anais was old enough to comprehend the world around her. "No, she just drank too much warm milk," she responded back, though judging by the look on her little sister's face, that tale old fib hadn't managed to convince her one bit. She was nine, not mentally deficient. Kids were naive in their own right, but even they could sense a person's bullshit from a mile away. "Go upstairs would you? and take Blue with you cause he's practically sleep walking."
She gestured her hand in the direction of the little boy who was dragging his feet across the corridor with his eyes barely open. Anais shrugged her jacket off and tossed it at the foot of the staircase "But it's not even 10:30 yet, and I'm hungry."
"You just ate 15 minutes ago."
"I'm goin' through puberty." Anais retorted as she walked over to Blue to grab his hand when he was dangerously close to face planting a wall.
