 1964, Christmas Eve, Mexico

OUTSIDE PEOPLE SHOUTED. Terrible, terrible things. Threats. Statements. Every few minutes you'd hear a large bang on the door, seeming to shake the walls of the house. Two pairs of footsteps echoed through the rooms running around the floors and upstairs.

A four year old girl sat on the counter of the kitchen island, the farthest room in the house with the back exit. Her arms hugged around the large luggage she had laying on her lap, three times her size, she clutched it and held onto it tightly. Beside her sat her nine year old brother, doing the same thing. They stared blankly at the tan cabinets, counters, and cupboards in front of them. The girl kicked and swung her feet below her, trying to calm her self down from what ever was happening.

Her mother rushed into the room, she was a beautiful woman, one that could stop and make people stare everywhere, the girl loved her mom very deeply. Silk brown hair rested upon her mothers shoulders, unlike hers, but she shared the same deep brown eyes. She kept wondering why her mother was wearing her travel gear. "Mama, what's happening?"  "Nothing precious, just wait there with Gabriel please!"  her mother quickly grabbed something before being called by her father from upstairs. "Marisol! Up here please!" "Coming!" her mother strode out of the room, her coat and waves of hair trailing behind her.

"Gabriel, what's happening?" she repeated, asking her brother. "Nothing Mila! Just sit here and wait like Ma and Pa said!" he snapped back. So Mila sat there, shut up, tightening her grip on her suitcase, resting her head on the edge. Her mother came back into the room, a gold key gripped in her hands, she stood and looked around for a second before gliding to a drawer Mila never noticed before. Mila raised her head to see what her mother was going to find as she twisted the key in the keyhole. As she yanked it open, the quick screech hurt Mila's ears. She heard a clattering, and her mother went out of the room, a key and two strange sticks in her hands.

Mila had a helpless look, etched across her features, she was tired, she didn't know what was going on, she was just told to sit there and wait.

  Sit there and wait.
