NINE

ZAYNAB

Crocheting. That was the one I went for.

Why? Because I already knew how to, and I'd like an easy project.

I knew we were supposed to learn new things, but please, I also did not come here to be stressed. Which is why I was overjoyed when the official said this "workshop" would last  for this week only. So as I walked into the first classroom on the block, for the crocheting class, I was satisfied, seeing that the number of people uninterested in this skill were greater than the interested people. So far, there were only six people - girls, in the classroom, and I'd be the seventh.

I walked straight to the desks at the back, placing my purse down first before taking my seat. After waiting for a while, and no other person had come into the class, the lady whom I presumed was going to "teach" us crocheting, got up from where she was seated, stood in front of us, and with a deep breath, began speaking.

She was okay, to say the most. Ebony, petite, had a slim thick body, and the stiffest weave I'd ever seen on a human. No, I'm just kidding, nothing compares to the wigs of old ladies who sell in market stalls. Her makeup was, well, okay, it was a different colour from her skin though, and her nails, orange. Wow.

"Good morning, campers" she greeted with a gap-teethed smile, and somehow, I found myself smiling back. "My name is Lois, and I'm going to be taking you all on this little workshop that your camp organizers have set up with the aim of equipping you with little skills that could earn you at least a complete meal for a day"

Lois.

"So, before I start-" she trailed off when he walked into the classroom. Almost absentmindedly, and suddenly, very abruptly stopped. His eyes were on me, and then they moved, over each and every one of the girls seated here, and then they landed on Lois. And for a moment, it looked as if he was contemplating whether to stay or go. It was obvious he knew where he was, and the battle now was whether to carry on, or to retreat.

I prayed he joined us.

Because he was the only person I knew, and also, he was Maina, the name I'd scribbled all over my diary last night and this morning, and now, here he was, coming to me.

"Hey," I heard his voice, and I looked away from him, to Lois, who he was talking to, and back to him. The way he stood at that door just made him seem like some outer space creation. The white light from the sky contrasted with his very dark complexion, making me realize his actual blackness.

And to be honest, it made my insides turn to jelly.

He was perfect, for me. And he would be mine.

"Crocheting" Lois stated, looking from him to the class. "DIY and coding is further down the block"

"Oh no," he chuckled. A sound that made me want to faint and wake up in those arms of his. Let me not even get started on his facial expression when he chuckled. How?? How can someone be someone be so attractive just by doing the littlest thing?

"I'm here to crochet- sorry, to learn how to"

That one sentence definitely made heads turn.

He was perfect. A man that wanted to learn how to crochet. Perfect, I said. We would fall in love and live happily together.

"Oh wow," Lois laughed. "Take a seat then, we're just starting"

He nodded and started to walk into the class, towards me, with his eyes fixed on the empty desk next to mine. It was clear he was somehow interested in me too. If not, why would he look at me that way, and come sit next to me, when we've barely talked.

Yet, I was certain he was my future husband.

Finally, he got to the seat next to mine and settled in. He was so much prettier close up and I couldn't seem to take my eyes off him, or keep my mind one place. The classroom was suddenly hot, and I wanted to take off my hijab. He seemed to have noticed my state, because he turned and flashed me a smile. A lopsided smile. Ya, Allah!

This man would not be the death of me.

"Alright!" Lois' voice snapped me back to the present, when my mind had already reached the number of kids Maina and I would have, and how we'd name them. Her voice was starting to, and was probably going to get me annoyed, if she didn't allow me scope in peace.

"So, before the disruption, I wanted us to get to know each other, by standing up to introduce ourselves briefly. As you know, I'm Lois, and I'm your tutor. So, you guys start -

-From the backseat"

My eyes darted from the boy whom I was formerly ogling, to the trainer standing in front of the class. And like she was referring to me, her eyes were set on me as well. There was no way in the world I was going to-

"Stand up and tell us about yourself, please" she smiled softly at me.

I looked around the class, and as expected all eyes were on me. I hated audiences, I couldn't see myself talking in front of these people. Especially while he's here.

What if I mess up?

Staring at the cream coloured walls of the class, I said nothing.

"Hey," Maina whispered next to me. I turned to face him, there was a gentle smile on his lips. "It's okay, just say your name"

I let out a shaky breath before getting up on my feet.

"Hi, I'm Zaynab" I sat down immediately, not wanting any more of the attention on me. I heard Maina chuckle beside me, and I turned to him as he got up and introduced himself. Again, I found myself watching his lips as he spoke, even when he sat down and then turned to me, whispering something, and wondering what it would be like to just-

"-Zee!" Maina laughed, snapping me back to reality. Suddenly, my heart increased its pace, pounding against my chest as I stared wide eyed at the boy whose lips I'd been openly ogling.

Ya Allah na.

"What's the matter? Is there something on my face?" He asked again, this time obviously teasing me as a smirk graced his melanin face. "Or you just can't take your eyes off-"

"Ka taimake ni Allah" (Help me, God) I muttered under my breath, once, twice, three times, cutting him off before facing the front of the class. Everyone had introduced themselves, now Lois was about to start the tutorials.

"So, today we're going to be learning the basics" she said, holding up a pack of yarn and a purse which I assumed had crochet pins inside. Looking at the boy seated next to me, I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.

Allah ya taimakeni.
